I recently got me a new one in 45-70,the medium sporter to be exact.:)
I want to put a loopy 1-4*20 on top.the ruger rings that came with her look like they will mount her a bit high..

What other options are out there, and what are some suggestions?

I have mine set up exactly as you describe and its perfect, one of my favorite hunting rifles.

Ruger makes lower rings, and IIRC they'll exchange the ones you got for them. I seem to recall doing that with my old M77 in .270 since I wanted low rings. Call their customer service line, they should be able to help you out.

New England Custom Gun makes a really trick peep sight that attaches to the rear scope dovetail and (reportedly) holds zero when it is removed and replaced. Very nice as a backup sight or even as a primary. Let's face it, you're not going to be reaching across the coulee to swat deer with the 45-70...unless your coulee is particularly narrow.

Besides, when you scope a 45-70 you make Jesus cry.

I aint afraid of Jesus,,.:nest:

LOL,,actually I agree with you..I like open sights but past 75 yards I would likely require glasses. The peepers are not as sharp as they used to be.I figure the farthest I would shoot this rifle is likely to be 100 to 150 yards in the terrain I hunt and I would like too use a low power scope too help get me there.
