Ruger No 1 rifles...I'm hooked!!!

Holy cow!! I like the Ruger, but getting one or two of those rifle to shoot has been keeping me at the range.
This is my first attempt to post a picture, so I hope this works.

This is my .270. I think a nice tung oil refinish on the stock should bring that bit of tiger stripe out.

I also have a #3 in .223 that has been fun. I got rid of the barrel band and had my favourite gunsmith convert the fore end to an Alexander Henry style to maintain the Ruger look.

I have an international in 7x57 and this is my go to rifle. bought it last summer and killed a nice buck with it. now I'm looking to buy one in 45-70 with a loooong barrel.

probably the best rifle I ever owned and the last I will sell.

I have a Ruger #3 in .223 and the wood don't look like that! Wow! I'm jealous.

Very nice!! Sent you a PM concerning accuracy help for the Ruger No. 1.

Page 6 gives a description of the pictures on page 4 and a pretest to see if the hanger tension screw would help. I'll give that a try this spring. I'm rather keen to go out now, but never have much faith in my groups when my trigger finger has gone numb.

I've been kicking myself for passing on a #1 .375 H&H I saw for a reasonable price on the used gun rack at my favourite gunshop. It was the traditional blue and walnut and wasn't on the rack for long. At the time the lads in the back room of the shop had just finished putting my left handed bolt action .375 together so the $'s were a little scarce.

Barbara (wife) had queried why I should need a .375. I explained it was a purely selfless purchase as I needed it to protect her from the tigers that prowled the high grass around the garage. She suggested I use the Weedeater. I fear that lady is losing her sense of romance as she grows older.

I had thought a single shot dangerous game rifle was a bit of an oxymoron, but a lad should always keep an open mind.

I had a somewhat similar question from my wife when I picked up my model 70 in 458WM.

I tried to explain that in anticipation of the return to tropical conditions with global warming and with that, the possible return of wildlife such as elephants, I'd be ready:D. In the meantime, if we got a little property out in the boonies, I could use it for clearing land. I don't think she saw the rationale of my logic:p.

If one had the desire to buy a used No.1 to rebarrel to .338 Lapua, what chambering should said individual find a no.1 in to make the swap possible? I am unfamiliar with no.1's and unsure about different action and bolt face sizes...google doesn't turn up much for me on this one

Nice rifle, Johnn, and good shooting - both of you.

Here's what my hunting partners refer to as my "little girl friend":

The target was shot with 260 grain Nosler partitions ahead of 71 gr. Reloader 15. I get an honest 2700 f/s according to the Chrony

Damn, this pic is larger than I thought.

Have we just started a new thread? "Rifles I bought when I couldn't get a No. 1" ??

The rim diameter on the Lapua is .588" give or take a thou. The same as the .416 on which it was based. This is some .055" larger than your neighbourhood belted magnum.

The nice thing about a falling block is you don't have to worry too much about "bolt faces", but the extractor/ejector would need replacing or modifying.

Could you have a .338 Winchester rechambered? It's probably the first question I'd ask my gunsmith. The increased length of the Lapua would be a problem with a bolt gun, but not the No.1.

A new barrel (Pac-Nor match), turned and headspaced costs in the $700 range up here, but if I were building a serious far-shooter I would be thinking long and hard about putting on the barrel of my choice.

I have a feeling I have oversimplified this terribly, but maybe I've stirred the pot a bit so that someone who knows of what they speak can straighten us out.

Jeff - if Ruger #1s get you going then here's the Ruger #1's great grand pappy - a rebored Holland and Holland Woodward-Patent Falling Block Rifle - .35 Winchester. This month I've been conversing with the new owner of this rifle. He's Canadian and I'm guessing spent more than a few bucks to get it.
