Ruger No.1 vs. No.3 barrel contour

Good morning all,

I am in the midst of a project to re-barrel or re-bore a Ruger No.3 from 22 Hornet to a larger caliber I can hunt deer with.
Does anyone know if any of the Ruger No.1 barrel profiles are the same as the No.3? I have been working on the stock and wonder if I could simply swap barrels and extractors with a larger caliber and still have the forend match the barrel contour?
Thanks,
Tharjoe

It’s not far from a #1B, which is close if not the same as a #1s in 45-70.

I bought a set of beat up laminate from a stainless 1B or 1V. I chopped the pistol grip off, to match the #3 style rear stock. The forend I chopped much shorter, and skimmed the whole thing to roughly 1s proportions. The forend did require some bedding to close some gaps, but nothing horribly ugly.

All that said, if you go onto Liljas website, they list most factory barrel contours. You could just get your fresh tube made to whatever contour you want. Or send your current barrel to the barrel maker to copy. Lots of options.

Thanks very much!
I am considering sending it to Ron Smith for either a re-bore or re-barrel. I am thinking along the lines of a slim English style stalking rifle. I would prefer it in 25-35 Winchester, but that will cost a fair bit. I was wondering if there was a possibility of finding a Ruger barrel in a suitable caliber. I will keep looking.
I will certainly look at Lilja's website.
Cheers!

If you really want to match your forend - nothing beats a rebore. It's also cheaper in this case.

That's likely what I will do, and I think there is enough meat in the chamber area to handle the re-chambering. Someone previously did drill and tap the barrel for Weaver bases, and the holes are a bit deeper than I would have expected. Hopefully that is not an issue. I will have to do some measuring....

Number 3 were factory drilled and tapped for Ruger bases, the same ones that are used on the 1V. These allow you to use Ruger Rings.
Weaver also made bases to fit.

I've always wanted to build a 25-35 to go with my 30-30 and 38×55.
