Can someone tell me a little more about this rifle? As far as I know its the carbine version of the No.1 with a 22" barrel ? Most important of all...would I be asking for punishment to shoot one in 375 H&H

I dont' care much about the loss of Velocity in the shorter barrel.

Was the No. 3 made in .375 H&H?
Yes, you would be asking for punishment.
I have fired a No. 3 in .45-70 with hot loads, and recoil was apparent.

...#3's were never chambered in .375 H&H....

...at the factory, they were chambered in .375 Winchester ( the 30-30 casing blown out). Factory #3's were also chambered in .22 Hornet, .223 Rem., .30-40, .44 Mag., and .45-70. Today, the #3 is rarely encountered and is considered a collectable arm. Many of them have been converted by gunsmiths......

The 45-70 I had was a terrible finger bruiser!

I let it go when one guy shooting it said "WOW did you see the muzzle flash"
There was non in the daylight :runaway:

Exactly, this one was born as a .375 win , I think I will end up passing on it.

thanks guys.

I just had a load worked up for my No.3 in 45-70. Shooting 350 gr Speers at a little under 2100 fps. Oh yeah , the recoil is there. Off hand it aint bad but it has a 1 inch decelerator pad. This isnt a gun you go pounding away with but when it barks you know its gonna get the job done.

I had one in 22 Hornet...great little rifle....got it well under an inch for 5 40gr VMax's...gophers hated it.....wish I'd kept it...but I could say that about a 100 other rifles...

The Ruger#3 I had in 45/70 would leave the fingers swelled after shooting. It had some pretty wicked recoil when loaded hot.It was pretty much a given you would have brusied shoulder and fingers after a few rounds. There is not much give in the steel butt plate.

...Ruger #3....

...you either love them or you hate them...I don't think they were much of a commercial success for the company...I have one in .223 and I will never sell it...wish I could find one in .44, unaltered, of course....
