I have a new to me #1 on the way and I have been reading about scope mounting problems and getting enough eye relief with the standard rings. Some have indicated the need to get extensions. What have been you're experiences with this? I have a zeiss 3-9 I was thinking I'd try out on it.

I was also considering picking up an older Leupold Vari x II 3-9 ... my thought was they probably had longer scope body's to work with, and might allow you to get eyepiece back further. Anyone know if they were made longer than the current models??

I also considered this long and hard when I scoped my Ruger No. 1 last year. I went with a Leupold Fixed 6x36mm. This scope has 4.2 inches of eye relief and 5.1 inches from back of eyepiece to adjustment housing (where the rear ring is located when you have the scope as far back as you can.) For a total distance of 9.3 inches from front of rear ring to end of eye relief. This is fine as it, but it's at the limit and I wouldn't want the scope any further away.

As an example the Leupold Fixed 6x42mm has more eye releif at 4.4 inches, but the scope is shorter with a measurement of 4.7 inch from the adjustment housing to the rear of eye piece for a total of 9.1 inches from rear ring to eye. So even though it has more eye relief it ends up being harder to get a good sight picture.

I would take this into account when you shop for a scope and either get a scope with a distance of 9.3+ inches from adjustment housing to end of eye relief or look at extension rings.

P.S. what did you get?

Thanks for the measurements - I'll take a closer look at my zeiss before pulling it off it's current home. I picked up one off exchange that had been re-tubed to 257 roberts. I've been wanting a number one and a 257 for a while so thought it was a good fit for me :)

Of the four #1's I have only the RSI has an extension ring on it with a cheaper Bushnell. It's the way I bought it and haven't shot it enough to change the glass. The other three, 1V, 1T and 1A, have VX2's and a 4200.

My No 1 wears a Minox RA5 in 2 x 10 and presents no eye relief issues. It just came back from Africa and my only complaint was that the cross hairs are a tad heavy for Springbuk at 300 yds.

That has been an issue with new #1V I purchased last fall. The rifle only has a 13.5" L.O.P which to me is much shorter than what I am used to. I figured if anything I'd be creeping up too close to the scope but that's not the case and the scope I put it on temporarily until I can afford a better one gives me eye relief troubles. I was looking at purchasing a Leupold Vari X II and am hoping besides an upgrade to a much better optic that I get a much needed ipgrade in eye relief as well.

Well the rifle arrived today and I gave the zeiss conquest 3-9 I have a try on it. I have it as far back as it will go and it's good - but I could still use a c-hair more if I was being picky (i'm like that sometimes). The one thing I'm noticing is the larger bell on the zeiss kind of limits the breech area for loading/ejection. I'm new to number 1's so this might be normal ... just something I noticed.

the only Ruger #1 I have is the RSI in 270.
i got it off of a fellow gunnut here and he had put a Leupold VXI on it and i was kinda wondering about that. he explained to me that he had experimented with a number of scopes, including the VXII and VXIII's and found that the VXI had the most eye relief for him
we got to where we were thinking that eye relief might be relative to the individual somehow. I have no idea, all i know is that i have been very pleasantly surprised by the amount of room i get with this scope and how easy it is to acquire a sight picture. i can push my head forward, pull it back, throw the rifle to my shoulder and i have a full, clear picture.
the optical of the scope is so far away from my eye that I can just shoot the gun like a rimfir as i know that I am not going to get "scoped" by the rig.

so what i am saying is that i really like the cheaper Leupold which really surprised me. it seems to be a perfect fit for the RSI for ME, and none of the clumsy looking extended basses are required................

just my $.02 worth there........
