Ruger Old Army Pistol

in all fairness, aside from the nipples, how often are you going to have to replace those parts - unless you're beating the s*it or using for a hammer or something it's a NEVER HAPPEN situation- mine is still in the same condition as it left the factory save the cylinder which could use a re- blue- that's 41 years and I haven't been easy on it- most MACHINISTS can make spares on a unimat if needed- your trick is to find one- imo, the spare parts thing is a ghost problem and NEEDN'T be considered- just watch for your grip screws backing out
and I have used 45 colt bullets in it with no problems- as well as 45 acp=230 and 250 grain, so you need not cast your own unless you prefer it
Clean the threads with Break Klean and dab a little black RTV silicone on them and screw them back in. Problem solved.

Would the 45 ACP not be like 'throwing hot dogs down a hallway'? The BP smoke and blast might make it look effective, but it'd make 'pretty thin soup' as far as actual energy.
Pure lead 45 LC bullets would bump up nicely though. A pure lead bullet will bump up amazingly well.
The only time I've tried running undersized bullets was trying to run .451 through a 455 Webley. It'll throw them, sure. But if you were actually shooting at a plate or a reactive target, it's obvious that it's got '0' energy stored when hitting the plate.

As I noted earlier, the rear fame screws in stainless steel are no longer available, and that information came from the nice lady at Sturm, Ruger. I bought the last four at $6.50 each. I have not yet heard back from the component part company, so I'll be going to see them tomorrow or Tuesday. The exact copy hexagonal nipples are made by Butler-Creek/Uncle Mikes of Oregon, and I get them from a dealer there on our annual trip to the state. PM me for details - he sends them anywhere, and they are US$17.95 a set of six - perfect replacements.

I've just finished cleaning up my ROA after a four-hour session, during which time I put around 100 or so shots down it. I wipe it over after each cylinder-load, but otherwise don't baby it. My first shot today was a nine at 25M right-handed, and my last was an eight, shot right-handed. Today I was trying out Pyrodex Select, and really could not tell quite why is was called that - it felt zackly the same as either P or T7...

Have a great Christmas, all, if I don't hear from you again, and happy and gunsmoke-filled 2016.

I have a 7.5 inch stainless Ruger OA with adjustable sights and consider it the best cap and ball revolver that I have ever shot. It is more accurate than some of my cartridge revolvers and I have never experienced a jam from spent percussion caps.

Yes what Gab said...
And I have shot a few K through my ROA

I did develop a slight and deliberate tip up of the muzzle while cocking the hammer.
Doing this right after firing becomes quite natural, and insures falling away of the spent cap.

I will even suggest the cap will fall away easy when still quite hot, right after firing.

did you try snaps shots in Quebec?- carole petrie- might be my pistol, but I can't see ruger using different screws and such over the Blackhawk- I know for a fact that the screws in my redhawk are the exact same screws in the old army- what I would do is acquire a Blackhawk manual , order those parts, and TRY IT- do NOT mention the old army as that will put up a brick wall immediately- if it doesn't work you're out all of about 8 bucks plus shipping

ROA manual should still be available online...

well the only difference between my 45 acp and my 45 colt slugs is 25 grains- they all drop at 455- run them through the sizer for 452- all I can do is suggest you TRY IT- and do you think for a minute that ruger doesn't use the EXACT SAME BARREL for the old army, Blackhawk, and Blackwhak 45 acp- the reason they suggest a 457 soft ball or mini is b/c they want a good seal in the cylinder-
