Thinking about getting a revolver. Need a little help from the guys who own either.

Ruger GP-100 in 357/38 SS
or
Taurus Tracker 357/38 SS

For you guys who own them what do you like about them? What do you dislike about them?

I'd say give Taurus a try, since it looks like you already have some Rugers (judging by your user name)... I only handled Tracker but thought it was a nice gun. I don't like the grips though (but I don't like factory ruger grips either) so I'd replace them with Houge grips. I always found Rugers to be unrefined and rather rough looking, Taurus has a nicer touch to it IMO

In my life, I have sold exactly two guns. One was a BPS I bought on speculation and flipped. The other was a Taurus 669 .357 mag that I bought myself for my 18th birthday and intended to keep forever.

The rear sight was cranked all the way one side, and it still would not shoot centre. The grips were never tight, and the gun frame would shift inside them. Any loads greater than .38 +P would lead to sticky extraction. Full bore .357 loads that worked great in my friends GP100 would lock the gun up tight, and actually caused a slight crease in the thinnest section of the cylinder crane. The mainspring was light and would only set Federal primers off reliably. Lead shaving in the forcing cone was chronic.

It was, in short, a piece of unmitigated feces, and I will never so much as pick up a Taurus again.

To fill in the data point: The gun was bought brand new mail order from LeBarons in April 1991. It was a 6" blued model.

I am buying a GP 100 .357 for my wife and after researching many guns including the Taurus and Smith & Wesson. From what I have read and heard, you can't go wrong with the Ruger GP 100 but you could possibly go wrong with the Taurus.

Cbabes, I was thinking of staying with a company that I already own guns from. Altough I dont own any ruger pistols or revolvers....

I've owned and handled several ruger pistols. Ruger has great customer service and make a strong reliable product. I had a chance to handle a taurus but not fire it. The Tauras did not impress me at all. Stick with the Ruger or have a look at the S&w 586 / 686.

If you are on a budget and feel the need to buy new, then go with the Ruger. At least if something breaks, they will fix it. It's funny, but Ruger basically has no legal warranty, but their customer service is great and they reputation is great for warranty type repairs.
Tauras has a lifetime warranty, but it's almost impossible to get them to repair anything or to even get parts from them to repair. There reputation for warranty repair, even with a lifetime warranty, is horrible.
Now, if you can stomach used, 586/686 run a little cheaper or in line with the new Ruger, and is the cats ass of .357 revolvers.

That's kind of funny... I just picked up a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 for my wife!
(Another great E.E. purchase!! :D)

Guys, a 357 can fire 38 special outta the same revolver right?

Dad didnt know that but wants "evidence" for this...

Yes...in fact my Ruger Security Six .357 states both .38 and .357 MAG in the manual. I don't use .38 SPL in my .357 because the shorter case length causes more crud to build up at the end of the chambers in the cylinder. I used to load .38 SPL loads into .357 cases, but since it costs next to nothing to reload, I just load magnum loads now.

My Security Six is from 1980, and the bore is still mint with sharp rifling, and when the gong was still up at Poco at 200 yards, this revolver can hit it relatively easily. The GP100 you're looking at is the new improved version of this Security Six that made S&W owners envious at the time. I'd say go for the Ruger.

And yes...I love Hogue grips on all my Rugers.

Get the Ruger!

And yeah, .38 Special can be fired from a wheelgun chambered for the .357 Magnum. Fired thousands of 'em thru my .357's over the years... ;)

LOL!!! That's a good one! From the outfit in Quebec you mean? :D That's the only thing I don't like about Ruger...is their Canadian service rep.

As I am either the 3rd or 4th person in this thread to comment on ruger being good with their service ,you are obviously in the minority
