Today I had a chance to test out two Ruger Precision Rifles. One in 6.5 Creedmoor and one in 243 Win. Bottom line. The 6.5 Creedmoor was awesome and the 243 has me scratching my head. Testing done at the 100M CHAS range, 5 shot groups.

The 6.5 Creedmoor with a $250 Vector Optics Scope 6-25x56 (Aliexpress special).

The Hornady 140g BTHP with 43.3g of Win 760 were excellent. Both the factory 120g Amax and 140g Amax shot very well. Excellent results for a total package under $2000.

Now the confusing 243 win. This one had all the nice stuff, Nightforce NSX 8-32x56, Amercian Defense Mount, Atlas Bipod etc. It shot like crap.

I am shooting Hornady 105g BTHP. The load data is new and untested. It looks like the bullets were not stable. The 1/7.7" twist on the 243 should have worked fine with the 105g bullets. I'll have to try again with a different load. Anyone have any ideas.

The 243 had 40.5g of win 760 with winchester brass, seated 15 thou off the lands. Should have shot fine. I'm going to tear it down and swap a few things. I'm going to try some 95g SST. Don't have any 108 bergers. My 115g VLDs need 2.875" so they are too long for the mags.

Damn, those 6.5cm groups are like my best ever groups with my 5r. I'm really impressed with that one, the other one seems like it was built on a friday compared to its twin...

Lots of people down south having trouble with these in .243 when it comes to group shooting. Some are reporting it settles in and gets better after 2 - 3 hundred rounds.

I was going to say this as well. Watched a couple videos on the 243 and the comments were accuracy got better with a few hundred rounds down range.

7.5" twist might be a bit light in lower temps....

7" is recommended by Berger for the 105, and 108gr VLD.

It also wouldn't surprise me, if you measured the twist rate, that it's actually a 1:8 twist.... Which wouldn't be very good with the 105 BTHP or A-max unless pushed faster than 3K....

I have a 1:8 kreiger on a model 700 that won't shoot the 105 Amax's unless pushed past 3050....

Just a thought.

Higher speeds equal less stability, not more.

My savage with a 1:8" twist is fine with 105's at all speeds.

I use a 1-8" twist with Berger 105's in F-Class with a 6BR. Velocity around 2800 fps.
Very stable and accurate in my Rem 40X and Broughton barrel.
Here's a pic with sighters and warm up and then 5 groups for record. Done on a cold day in February, so I know i can shoot better in fairweather :)

Congrats on a great shooting 6.5 out of the box.

I think you are going to need to do some load tuning with the 243. The twist will work just fine. I just got back from testing a brand new Rem in 243 with a 9 1/8 twist as listed from Rem.

Nice round holes using Hrn 105gr BTHP... one test load indicated this might be sub MOA so I am going to tweak some more and see what I can get out of it.

All things being equal, SG goes down as velocity goes down.

Bryan updated the stability calculator to include his findings in the above article.

At 32F (what I've been shooting in lately), a 1-7.25 twist is recommended for the 105 Hybrid @ 3050 fps.

I'd be looking in that .243 barrel with a borescope... something is very wrong there. Check for positive recoil lug contact while you're at it.
