Ruger Precision Rifle accuracy is bang on!

Just got my Ruger Precision Rifle in 308. I sighted in the scope using approximately 20 rounds. Third mag with just Federal FMJ's at 100 yards I am literally firing through the same hole on many shots. I fired 11 rounds into the target, and all but two are less than an inch away from the bull. Very accurate rifle, probably the most accurate one I have ever owned.

Forget distance from the bull. Your rifle isn't quite zeroed. Lateral spread is less than an inch. The vertical spread is likely from technique. Looks as if the rifle is capable of near minute of angle with ball ammunition. That is good news.

300m stock barrel, stupid flyer. Didn't measure it if anyone has the program to do so I'd think it's around 2"

I have been shooting Federal GM Match 175 gr SMK factory ammo in my RPR. Best group at 100 yds is .37" on paper for 5 shots, and around 7" at 1008 yds for 5 shots on steel.
Accuracy seemed dismal the first time I shot. A fellow shooter pointed out that the whole gun felt a bit rattley, so we went over it from end to end and tightened up quite a few screws. Performed great after that.

I'm in the same boat. My RPR in 6.5 just continues to impress me. Started reloading for it and every load I've tried hasn't netted anything larger then 0.8" groups at 100yd

Heres my latest with 140gr Bergers and Reloder19

I'm happy with the accuracy of my RPR .308 so far....I know it doesn't mean squat but here is a 3 shot group at 100 yards with 7.62 South African surplus (147gr iirc). I had a horse shoe up my a$$ with that group but most (with 7.62 surplus) groups were 1.5-2". I used that ammo to do a rough site in and will use match next time I'm out.

1" squares. The two upper shots in second pic were from another (crappy) grouping.

That is not a very good group. At 100 yards they should all be at least touching.

Here is a 525 yard group, shot with factory 308 ammo. The vertical spread is less than your 100 yard group.

Your group shows promise. Try better ammo and try to shoot with minimal cheek pressure. I don't shave on match day and use my whiskers as a feeler to keep my cheek off the stock.

... Have I been doing it all wrong then? Newb here, but I was under the impression you want a decent weld/contact patch for cheek on rest. Is that not the case?

Any influence from breathing, heartbeat and muscle tension will be transferred to the rifle from each contact point.

You want consistency for looking through your glass... You get that from a comfortable consistent properly fitted cheek rest.

You don't see any LRPS guys holding their face off the stocks do yah ?

Depends. If you are shooting off your elbows, and the rifle is only supported by your left hand and right shoulder, a cheek weld is ok, but keep it light.

When shooting off a bench, the forend is on a front bag or bi-pod and the butt is supported somehow (usually a bag). If you put your head on the stock, you are now flexing the action downwards. The head is heavy (mine is, anyway) and the flex does not help accuracy. the fact that the weight will vary from shot to shot makes it much worse.

Note that the group I posted is 20 shots, with less than 2" vertical. This is the consistency of rifle and ammo you are looking for. If wind is an issue (as it is at 525 yards) shoot quickly. That group was shot in well under 1 minute.

also why u see LRPS guys run around with 5 different size shooting bags to build a rest at the stage.

Correct. I'm not saying don't contact the rifle just that you must be consistent and control how you do it. If you squeeze the hell out of the grip and hammer you face on the check rest you will see the scope reticles move with each breath or heartbeat.
