Curious about Ruger M77 bolt action rifles. You don't hear much on accuracy or quality of the rifle. For those of you who own or have owned one, any comments? Are they good rifles and would you recommend them.

Ruger Model 77 Rifles...

Have owned three. First was an older 'tang safety' model blued/wood stock in .300 Win Mag with 24" barrel. Bought it used. Was capable of 3 shot clover leaf groups with my pet handload [70 gr IMR4350 behind 180 gr Rem SP]. Second was a spankin' new MkII blued/wood stock in 6.5x55mm Swede with 22" barrel. Shot sub 1" right outta the box. Sadly, sold both of those gems.

Currently, have a minty 'tangsafety' model blued/wood stock in 7x57mm Mauser. Only shot it with factory ammo so far. Will do sub 1" 3 shot groups with that.

Am happy with Ruger rifles with what I've owned. While I seem to have more Remington 700's than anything else I certainly wouldn't turn down a Ruger 77 at the right price... That's my .02 ;)

I've owned/still own a few of them (22lr, 223, 220 Swift (X2), 358 Win, 35 Whelen). I've never had one that shot poorly and to be honest, I've had the most consistency (accuracy-wise) with Rugers.:D

Hey Myles,

I currently have 4 Rugers. I am going to the Mission range on Sunday so you are welcome to meet me up there and try them out and see how well they shoot.

I am a Ruger fan and have been happy with all that I have owned. I wish I could have kept them all, but I have settled on the stainless synthetic models.

Let me know.

James
:)

Rugers are OK, and make decently-accurate varmint rifles. For hunting/varmingtin purposes these are just fine. I wouldn't use one as the basis of a competition rig though - Remingtons are more established and have a better aftermarket, and Savages are easier to work on.

I had a M77V in 25-06 for 200m benchrest shooting, back in the day. It would shoot 3 rnd groups you could cover with a quarter if you did your part.

I was thinking of getting a Ruger M77 Stainless Laminate as well.

Could someone with one of these post a few pics? The one on the Ruger website doesn't do it justice.
This is the perfect thread for this.

Ruger make a good rifle, a little on the heavy side but the,the MII is a strong action with CRF, they fit me well and feel solid. My 25-06 shoots 115gr partitions at 3230 fps. with 60gr of retumbo with excellent accuracy.

i had an m77 in 300wm and currently have a 308 stainless mark 11 mounted ina compact grey laminated stock. it was a takeoff from one othe the super short mark 11. they are work horse rifles, you can beat them and they keep on ticking. acuracy not as good as my tikka's but close enough. i would buy another without hesitation.

I have two rugers 300 and 7x57 with the tang safety the 300 little bit on heavy side but the 7x57 is a gem to shoot took a 13 year old kid out and he shot a box thru it with no problem I also had a 300 in stainless it shot really nice but can hold on to two 300 so I sold it (not a smart move ) I am sure you will be pleasantly surprise and never had a problem with them the reason I like them the best because of the tang safety slip on and off with the flick of your thumb Good Luck

My M77 RSM 416 Rigby will shoot 400 grain Federal Trophy Bonded loads just under 1". Hard to complain about that. I wish the wood was nicer on it, but I'm picky.

Punctuation...dammit!

My experience with M77MII rifles is limited to one example, but it is positive. Tough, reliable, accurate, and kind of heavy.

The trigger on mine needed some help so I went with a Timney, real nice. Some guys just tweak the triggers on theirs though.

The rifle was MOA out of the box, well below MOA with some handloads. I have it at ATRS getting bedded and floated, mostly for stability, but maybe the accuracy will get even better too.:)

Good hunting rifles, I'd buy another one.

I've bought many Ruger firearms over the years and seem hard pressed to sell any of them because they work so well. I am especially fond of the 77 series, particularly in the RSI pattern. The balance of the rifle is phenomenal, although there is a little bit of muzzle jump on firing. One weakness that has been mentioned is the trigger. With a little work they can be made better, or you can change them to an aftermarket. No hesitation on buying one, you'll be happy if it's in good shape.

I have owned 5 in total. A 22-250, 25 06, 7x57(wish I still had), .270 and a
7mm mag. They have all been good to me. I think they are pretty tough to beat. I think that you would not be disappointed in buying one.

Dave.

Have had two, make sure you budget for a trigger job. Other than that they are pretty good. They didn't feed real smooth but they didn't jam either.
The 25-06 was really heavy but shot well. The 308 Ultra light was very nice for packing all day long and kicked as hard as a 375 H&H with fullpower loads!
I sure like their scope mounting idea, the other outfits should follow suit then in a worse case senario you could actually pull off the scope and be able to see the iron sights. They also have the nicest bluing jobs for a factory rifle, you'd have to get a Weatherby or a custom jobby to get a better relection than that!
