I have a Ruger M 77 Mark 1 and I would like to put my Leupold VX-R 3-9x40 on it.I have to get 30mm rings but everywhere I look, they are only sold as singles, not in sets. A sign of the times we live in, perhaps, but none of the people at Cabelas or a couple other onl8ne stores seem to know which is the front ring and which is the back ring ie the number stamped into the ring to differentiate betwen the front ring and the back ring. Can someone please enlighten me ?? I have also tried the Ruger website to no avail.

My Hawkeye was purchased with a #4 on the front and a #5 on the rear.
A bit too much clearance on the front, so I ordered a #3 for the front and moved
the #4 to the rear.
Number 5 is in the #3 packaging.

The bigger the number, the higher the scope ring base is.
The #3 packaging info is
"Scope ring assy, .812 HGT, HAW"
HGT I guess stands for height.

They are sold individually because some models use two rings the same height, others use two different heights. So instead of having two hundred different sets in each store, they sell them individually. Also since most Ruger rifles come with rings, some would only require one ring to change heights. For example: say you bought a m77-Mark II which came with a #4, and #5 but you wanted to mount your scope lower. You would simply buy a #3, and move the #4 to the rear ring position.

If you want to go higher a #5 and a #4, lower a #4 and a #3.
All Ruger M77, M77MKII, and Hawkeye take the same ring if they were manufactured to accept Ruger Rings.
The exception is the round top Tang Safety M77 that do not accept Ruger rings and were drilled and tapped for Remington bases .
