Are there any options out there for 'lightweight' rings for the Ruger M77 rifles?
The cast iron boat anchor factory rings are functional but...

Leupold or Millett are less clunky.
I did see some Ruger ones once that had the bases machined and drilled out and the corners kerfed..they were anorexic but looked slick.

AFAIK, the Ruger M77 action weighs a few ounces less than the equivalent length Winchester M70. Lotsa light/fairly light M70s get built. Rugers just don't have the aftermarket.

Those Ruger rings appear to me to be a natural for a gifted machinist (I'm not) to pare off some weight. They are monolithic flat slabs almost begging to be trimmed as bolt handles sometimes are. Funny thing I've never seen it done.

There seems to be alot more metal on that reciever, versus the round bottom of others.

Yup, for sure. But, I think Ruger's barrel contours and, the subject of this thread, rings, are really what has perpetuated their reputation for being 'over weight'.

Just for information's sake, this is a cut & paste list of action weights:

The following weights of full actions (bolt, guard screws, trigger guard magazine liner, trigger assembly, recoil lugs, follower and spring) - everything except the barrel, stock, scope and mounts.

Remington 700 short ADL .............2 lbs. 3 1/2 oz
Remington 700 short BDL .............2 lbs. 4 oz.
Remington 700 long ADL ..............2 lbs. 6 1/2 oz.
Remington 700 long BDL ..............2 lbs. 7 oz.
Remington 600 .......................1 lb. 15 oz.
Remington 788 long (.243, .308) .....2 lbs. 11 oz.
Remington 7..........................2 lbs. 2 oz.
Mauser Mark X .......................2 lbs. 15 oz.
Sako medium (current production) ....2 lbs. 5 oz.
Sako long ...........................2 lbs. 13 oz.
Ruger short dovetail receiver .......2 lbs. 6 oz.
Ruger long dovetail receiver ........2 lbs. 8 1/2 oz.
Weatherby Model 70 post-64 .......2 lbs. 13 oz.
Weatherby Mark V ....................3 lbs. 3 oz

There might be if the Ruger was a platform to build a lightweight rifle on. Don't get me wrong, they are a good rifle, but not a lightweight reciever by any means.

I like the solid feel of a Ruger rifle and actually they are not "that" heavy. I like my barrels even heavier than Rugers factory ones. I had LH Mk2 Ruger in 7mm-08 and decided to "improove" on it: instaled S&L 20" barrel in 308Win with "Mauser double step" over the chamber with 15/16" dia in front of it tapered to 11/16" dia at muzle then drilled the hole in the bolt handle, ditched Ruger high ring #5 so now I use only #3 and #4 b/c that's all is needed for my 4x Burris mini. In addition I milled the rings here and there after aneeling them ( factory makes them really hard!) and glassbeated and parkerized the whole works in matte black. Also I glassbedded the action, freefloated the barrel, drilled three long 3/4" dia holes in the butstock, milled two long and deep grooves under the barrel in the forearm, instaled european bearing sling mounts got rid of shiny plastic finish so now I have matte linseed oil finish instead. Now my rifle ready to hunt with scope, rings, nylon sling and four cartridges in the magazine weights 2oz under 8lbs is super accurate and I couldn't be happier with the results. It's nice to have machine shop in your own house! BTW my trigger pull is only 3lbs now the bolt was honned and lugs were lapped to.
