So I bought a Ruger Gunsite scout in .308 (lefty if you really need to know LoL) and I am wondering about optics for it.

Ive been running a round a fair bit looking at options and well, for a guy who has never used optics before its quite overwhelming.

Ill be hunting Moose/elk/deer in the Kamloops Bc and St Paul Ab areas, I dont think ill need to reach out any farther then 500 yards, the mildot seems appealing to me... but it needs to be rugged as heck.

I am looking to spend between $500-800, my research (small as it is) inclinese to think a 4x12x40 or 4x12x50 would be best.... I hear Leupold, Nikon and Burris are all solid units... but whats the opinion on here?

sorry if things seem contradictory, ive iron sighted my SKS at a range a bit. But this is my first season hunting and I want a unit to help my offset my handicap, so a good scope that i can grow into would be nice, yet not overly complicated. Im sorry but i dont think ill have the ability to adjust for wind etc so simple functions, but good glass and great reliability.

sorry for the run on sentences and rambling.

I use a straight leupold 6x36 lr on my scout with quick release rings on xs rail in case I want to use the open sights

Thats what you use eh? Well how do you like it? Is that range of eye relief good for the scout? how's parallax and clarity of the leupold? With the weight of the scope moved forward does it feel balanced? Do you ever find you get the sun reflecting off the glass when the sun is on the horizon behind you or any other issues?

Curious to hear what feedback the OP gets about best scope for his price range.

OP, sounds like you are just looking for a good hunting scope with standard eye releif and plan on removing the rear iron sight to mount it in the standard position.

Your title Ruger scout optics will have most people thinking you want a "scout" or forward mounted scope that mounts on the rail attached to the barrel in front of the receiver.

You should probably clarify which type you are after.

I got my ruger scout for point blank to 300 yards.
my experience with .308 out of an 18.5" barrel tells me I'd be doing the animals a favour keeping shots inside 300 and even then...... I would be getting much closer than that to an elk or moose , 200 yards or less. for big game out to 500, tho I've never shot an animal at those ranges(300 to 500) , I have a 7mm rem mag or a .338 win mag as they are the right tools for reaching out with authority.

anyhow, sorry for that side track, not trying to preach my thoughts LOL

as for optics, I'm looking at the monarch 3 , 2-8x32 NP , vortex diamondback 2-8x32 or 1 -7x35 and a few others.... I want a short, compact optic as I want to keep weight down.
the monarch can also come with a BDC recticle and has the ability for custom BDC turrets. the monarch is probably the one I'm going to get ( just over 400.00 I think)
I've removed the front rail for now and ordered a xs sight rail system
I am also contemplating a higher end etched recticle red dot but having a hard time wading thru all the choices out there.
I wish there was something like the leupold prismatic in a 1-6 or 2-7 but no dice there, 1x only.
everyones needs are different, I got the scout to fill a specific purpose in my hunting rifle collection and expect to probably never need to shoot much more than 50 to 100 yards on the hunts it will be needed for so my optics choices may be very different than the next guy

curious to hear what other guys are using as far as red dots and standard eye relief scopes.... in the hunting application...... my rifles very rarely visit a formal range

Sorry, Ill post more later, little busy. But i intend on using the provided rail thats with the rifle, albeit being able to use iron sights could be nice too i am not sure if using the rail with a scope would make using the iron sights and impossibility

if you want to keep the factory irons , you'll need to use the scout's forward rail and either a red dot style optic or a long eye relief pistol or scout scope.

with your budget of 400 to 500 and the distance out to 500....... and keep a back up iron sight set up
SELL the factory Ruger scout rail and screws (65.00 average)
SELL the factory rear sight and screw (55.00 average)
add that 120.00 to your 500.00 optics budget bringing it up to 600.00 budget
then
I'd be looking at an XS sight rail with rear aperture (brownells) about 150.00 landed i think
and a 3-9x40 or 2-10 x 42 or 50 in the 400.00 range and spend the balance on the rings.

My budget is up to $800 and i can wait for sales to purchase the scope system if needs be too (i.e fathers day sales).

Im very inclined to leave the original rail as is on the gun.

Pistol scoped ive heard mentioned for the ruger, but would they do the job? also it seems like a $400 scope is adequate. .... im willing to spend up to $800 on the scope and then whatever is needed to mount properly. but by my understanding using the original rail the mounting wont be to costly.

That narrows it down.

you'll need a long eye relief
I'd take a look at what leupold has to offer in their line of scout optics.

i wanted to keep irons but mount a standard eye relief optic, with the option to remove and use a red dot so went the xs rail with rear aperture
I'm still torn as to what optic i want LOL

Sorry for a newb question, but whats an example of a long eye relief?

also all the red dots are just 1x magnification right? the vortex spitfire 3x looks very nice but its built for a different bullet so it wont cross over right? but that unit looks nice lol but no idea if it works within my parameters or if an equivalent exists that does.

On mine aim using a regular scope with normal eye relief. My xs rail is a full rail with a rear peep sight on the original rear sight has been removed.

Abdul, the eye relief of a typical scope is around 2.5-3.5 inches and gets smaller as you zoom in the power. The relief is the distance the eye needs to be for the scope picture to be usable. With a handgun scope it's set up to be used at arms length and with a LER scope it's a bit less and made for forward mounting rails like on your scout.
You can run a regular scope with your scout if you remove the rear sight and use standard Ruger rings.

Handgun scopes can work on forward rails but they have a longer eye relief then a typical "scout" LER (Long eye relief) scope.... it should work on the Ruger because it has a lot of length on the rail and lot's of slots to place the rings in. I have a bushnell pistol scope on my Savage scout and it works pretty good but I also extended the butt stock to push the rifle further out. The savage does not have as forgiving a rail as the Ruger when it comes to where you can put the rings.

Many people don't like long eye relief scopes as the sight picture is a bit smaller and you can get glare if the sun is behind you.

You should probably try one if you can?

A nice modern illuminated standard eye relief variable in the 1-5 , 1-6 , 1-8 range would be pretty nice. The 1-8's are pretty expensive.... but they let you hunt on 1 power for quick shots up close and then dial in for longer shots.

Zoomed in with a pistol scope the eye relief is not very forgiving and the field of view is smaller.
