I am looking for my 1st DA revolver. Need opinions on which one.

I want a revolver for fun target shooting, non competitive.
I will have a minor tune up done just to smooth it out.

I have shot them both but not on the same day. Liked them both.

Smooth action, decent accuracy, and finding the right grip matters.
Name brand does not.

Opinions please...

Both the GP100 and 586/686 are fine guns, but u cant beat the trigger on the 586. Its personal preference. The Ruger is built like a tank so take whichever feels best in your hand.
Cheers:)

There both very well made DA revolvers with differant frame designs. I own both, so I kind of biased.

I find that the S&W triggers are always a little nicer than the Rugers and require very little tuning, if any. The S&W I use for PPC because the Ruger trigger just isn't as butter smooth as the Smiths, even after tuning.

I assume you mean GP100?

There both great revolvers, and you wont regret either of them. The Smith will have a slightly better trigger, out of the box, than the Ruger. The Ruger is tough as nails, and breaks down very easily, without any tools (except for a screwdriver to take the grip screw off), for cleaning/ maintenence. I have never taken a Smith apart, but Ive heard its a huge PITA. I have a GP100, and would recommend it to anyone (plus I love the factory grips)

Gp 100

Yes I am thinking GP 100, spelling error.

Maybe GP 100 is the way to go.
$ saved can go into upgrades.

What would you recomend in a nice bright front site for targets?

Sounds like a handy guy who follows instructions and takes his time can make big improvements in the action. With little chance of screwing up. The action could come close to a stock smith. Am I correct?

I also own both and of the four .357's I have my favourite by far is the 586; I even prefer it over my Python. I really don't know what attracts me about the GP100, whether it's the stainless look or the impression that you can load it up with just about anything outside of a mortar round and have no fear about the gun not being able to stand up to it. The long and short of it is that you won't go wrong either way.

It is a very tough choice. By the end of the day, you may need to buy them both. I will buy the 586 first if the condition is excellent becasue you can always buy the GP later as Ruger still making them.

My vote is for the GP100. I just bought a 6" stainless from the good guys at Wholesale Sports in Calgary. I bought it based on the tremendous amount of great reviews the gun gets both online and off. Very pleased with my purchase, and I'm sure I'll like it even more when my Wolf Spring kit gets here. The trigger is poop in my opinion. It's acceptably smooth, but the DA pull is just stupidly high. The grips, rear site, ergonomics, function, and looks are all spot on. The front site needs to be replaced with a Williams fire site or similar. Great pistol!

I see you're on the Ruger Forums ruger22, seems like a good site to learn from. Now if only I can find some carbon fibre or stainess grip inserts my GP100 would be perfect!

I like the ruger, but man, a smith is a SMITH! if your going to buy one it doesn't matter which you get. If your going to by two, buy the ruger first or you'll never buy one after you shoot the 586.

I would opt for the GP 100 simply because I have never owned one. The GP 100 I shot was a great revolver. Lastly, I owned a S&W M586 but I never became attached to it as I prefer N-Frames like this one. Regards, Richard :D
