Ruger SR-22 ammo choice with butler creek mags

I have similar issues with my Butler Creek steel lip magazines, it seems to be the first 4-5 rounds have issues feeding though there are days where I have no issues. When issues do occur the rounds come out pretty much flat, thus they get stuck on the feed ramp on the magazine then the bolt crushes them, a round that will feed properly is angled upwards. I have come to the conclusion that for the most part it is the spring in the magazine, though the feed ramp does play a part.

I've played with the idea of either pinning the magazine to 20 rounds or modifying the feed ramp. My number one solution would be to get the Ruger BX-25 magazines and throw out the Butler Creek ones but until the BX-25s are no longer a prohibited item in Canada that's just a pipe dream...

Also I typically had more issues with the CCI Blazer than other ammunition, the stuff that works great for me is the bulk packs of Federal 36gr Hollow Point, as a bonus there doesn't seem to be any wax on the rounds.

The fitment in our rifles may be slightly different though as I have a 10/22 in the Troy chassis and you have the SR-22, but it seems the issues are along the same lines.

Yes the rounds were definitely coming out more flat then angled and after working the spring up and down for about 20 minutes it seemed to loosen things up in the mag and the feeding was coming out of the mag much more angled. And yes like you said the rounds get squished in the chamber. I was worried on a couple of rounds that they would go off in the mag/gun chamber rather than in the barrel. I also think the excessive wax on the rounds doesn't help either in the mag. I can see some of the wax down in the mag and if that builds up next to the plastic piece at the bottom of them mag then I could see that binding up the smooth travel of the spring platform up the mag as rounds come out of the mag.

I'm planning a trip out to shoot on Sunday so I'll give a report to see if things improve with the mags after working the spring looser and trying different ammo, and the factory mag.

I sure hope quality control at Butler Creek isn't going downhill, we don't have a lot of good alternatives up here :(

I was pretty surprised to see that the platform which angles the rounds up and out of the mag was made out of a small round piece of plastic. They make the lip of the mag out of metal. Why not make the round platform out of metal? There just doesn't seem to be too much force and strength holding the rounds at a nice crisp angle.

I had this problem once, ammo feeding flat out of the mag. Pay close attention to loading the mag, make sure the base of the ammo is pushed right to the back of the mag. When I did this it was about the 5th round I had loaded that wasn't flush, once I figured this out it run flawless since.

How did it cycle with the factory 10rnd mag?

I have had the same problems with my BC mags feeding the rounds too flat, I found it happened more often with the speed loader than loading by hand. (maybe i am paranoid). I would agree with Remmy700, if you get one round in there wrong the rest will be wrong as well, find the one bad round and away you go.

How old are the mags in question? I find they need a little breaking in sometimes to work the spring, then there good to go.
