Ruger SR1911 COMMANDERS are in canada!

Mostly slide mass...I think you're really pushing the 1911 to run on 9mm and everything has to be right for that recipe to work.

If you scale down the reciprocating mass roughly in line with the impulse generated by 9mm vs 45, you end up with something very similar to a commander slide mass.

I like guns built to run in the middle of their performance envelope and I think a 9mm commander is much closer to that than a 9mm government.

With varying spring rates and different slide weights, for 9mm, I think the gun makers may have tested this theory. Pretty sure they build them to suit the ammo they will be shooting. As for preference, I guess it depends on the application, but a 5" 9mm 1911 is plenty capable of being a reliable gun.

Thank you for your response. I knew you had a good reason, makes sense.

Hopefully there is a bump in QC along with the increased price...

Handled a BNIB one at the LGS that was literally a rattle trap. (govt length)
Sample of one ... my sample of one bought 3 may 11, two days after release, is still great after 15,000 rounds (most my reloads, most shot at matches)

Anyway, back to Cmdr size - curious if a shorter barrel primarily for concealed carry will be popular in Canada where vast majority of the potential market can't carry it.

No sweat. My thinking is that to build a 9mm 1911, you have changed the following:

recoil impulse
cartridge length
cartridge diameter
cartridge is now tapered instead of straight

Given that 1911s are pretty mag sensitive, and that there are a ton of different mag manufacturers and only one has the spec to build a guaranteed functional one (Colt, and they periodically ignore the drawings) AND that set of drawings is for a gun firing an FMJ bullet that weighs almost twice as much as the one that goes in a 9mm 1911...

And as recently was discussed on PFC (and specifically in regards to 1911s as you likely recall but for the benefit of others anyway...) unless your gun sucks or is busted, it does the same thing on every shot. Slide goes back the same distance, hammer gets cocked to the same degree, barrel tilts the same amount, etc etc etc.

The magazine, on the other hand, changes on every shot. The amount of upward pressure changes. The amount of friction on the round being loaded changes. The angle of the round being presented to the chamber changes.

On top of that you have now taken a gun designed to run a straight walled cartridge one size, and stuck a tapered cartridge of different size in it. And are expecting it to cycle equally well the whole way through the mag.

It's not that nobody builds a working 9mm government - hey, Todd's gun got past 50,000 rounds right?

But in my opinion it's working at the edge of the envelope. And more importantly, the guys at Wilson Combat agree, and they're probably better at building working 9mm 1911s than anyone right now. And in fact I think the guys at Heirloom are thinking in a similar vein, although I don't remember now if they're building a 5" or a 4 1/4 for Todd.

^^I believe TLG's Heirloom gun will be a commander length series 80.

I've read quite a bit about 9mm 1911's in the last month but didn't get around to commander length discussions, thank you for the info.

I would consider the Ruger if I wasn't worried about the front sight falling off. I'll be playing with an NP29 to see if there is anything to this fad you bunch of 1911 cultists promote. Admittedly, the NP29 is not the best iteration of the breed to base any decision on.

Double stack mags tend to work better with tapered cartridges.
So, I'm just going to put this here: :D

CGN's scare me. I am relatively new to handguns. I am a woman, not a big tuff man. I bought a Ruger MKIII. Good gun. No problem. I bought a Girsan. Everybody was talking about eating Italian steel when the slide breaks, so if the original is bad, the copy is exponentially bad. Now I'm scared to shoot it. Bought a SAM 1911 in...wait for it...9mm. Now I'm afraid to shoot that as well. Thank god I have the Ruger. Please, don't say anything bad about that gun, please. I won't have anything left to shoot. LOL.

You don't have anything to worry about with the SAM or the Girsan. And don't believe everything you read on CGN, most CGNers aren't SME's ( myself included). Listen to guys like Slavex, Kevin B, Tritium, Wicked Police, Big Red and a few others.

Misanthropist knows what he's talking about too, but I can't take anyone seriously who has sideburns that well groomed. :D

'K, you're not going to like my opinion on the Ruger {go over to "damn I broke my Ruger Mk 3"}f:P: I read this post after I commented on the other:redface:.

Thanks, buddy, I new I could count on you to make it 3 for 3 as far as turds in my gun locker. LOL.
When I search "damn I broke my Ruger Mk 3" the only thing that comes up is this thread. So, if you want to totally make me paranoid, post a proper link using the link button, or don't, and leave me what little enjoyment I have left.
