Ruger SR1911 front sight snap right off (RESOLVED)

Hahahah... I saw the clip/mag debate start again earlier today, got home and was surfing FaceBook and saw this

I understand the debate, there is a definite difference

Two of my other pistols came with fiber front sights. One yellow and the other one red. I shoot indoor and I don't like those. I was happy with the 3 white dots on the Ruger.

Same issue with my front sight, Snapshots said just mail the slide to them and they will replace the sight under warranty and send it back. They also said this is a pretty common problem with the SR1911 and recommended replacing the sight with the Ruger fiber optic steel front sight for better reliability long term.

I bought the fiber optic sight from them ($49.95 + shipping) and installed it myself, but would not recommend this unless you have the tools and skills to hand fit the sight. It is not a simple drive in drive out procedure. Send the slide in, pay the coin, and put a sight on that will last.

Yes indeed. I guess they might have a liability to service only legal guns...
And by the slide only I hope they don't expect me to remove all other parts in it, cause I won't :)

My French is poor, but did they ask you for your registration certificate?? For a part which is not the firearm?

Oh... That would p!ss me off. I'll ask for an ETA before I send. If it's the case, I'll send all they ask except the slide, and rather ask them to send me the sight and pay a local smith to put it on.

Thanks.
I hope they're faster with this than they have been with my brother's gunsite scout. They've had it for 3 months to fix its safety.

I had exactly the same problem with my SR1911 and Snapshots just sent me a new sight that I will have installed here. It only took about 2 weeks to get the sight from Qubec to the Yukon, that's not too bad in my opinion

Hmmm - Did sending the sight and DIY was your request?

They asked for the slide, that's what I sent them. I'm expecting to get the slide with a new sigh on it.

They also told me they will not keep the slide for more than a week. That's nice and quick.

Let us know how you make out. I just lost the front sight on mine 3 days ago. They said the same thing, send them the slide.

No holster...

A friend at the range looked at my gun and came up with a plausible story.
The groove to insert the slide might have been done too deep which put pressure/stress on the sight part that sits on top of the slide (front)

In order to avoid the problem, the bottom of that front part should be filed a little, to make sure it fits nicely on the slide (not too tight)

They'll probably "get it" but it's the wrong term. It's like calling a trigger a hammer. "I pulled my hammer all day at the range"

On my semi, I load the magazine (or clip) with bullets, the bullets feed into the chamber and
after every shot the bullets are automatically ejected. (Almost like Ian Thompson's revolver
ejecting ....... casings.)

(Not me but someone else.)

A good theory, but my pistol had a visible space under the front sight blade when I purchased it and it sheared off with less than 200 rounds down the pipe regardless. There are some reports in the US of the replacement sights snapping off again as well, so I think this is more likely just a poor quality MIM part. It is hard to believe Ruger factory warranty service would not correctly fit a replacement.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to find a better machined steel replacement in Canada, as it seems no one will ship real Novak sights from the US.
The only decent quality sight I could find here was the Ruger fiber optic sight (Snapshots). This sight did require filing under the blade to avoid slide interference, as well as a fair bit of dovetail reshaping to fit correctly.

I didnt have much luck with the ruger fibreoptic replacement on my SR1911,it was a real bear to fit,and then I found that it was way too short causing the gun to shoot 8 inches high at 25 yards.Took it off and put back the factory sight.Waste of 50 bucks. The Dawson sight looks really nice and its the right height, but these are really tough to get hold of in Canada.

This is very strange, my Ruger fibre optic replacement sight shoots fine for elevation at 25 yards. Perhaps shoots a touch low if anything, and better than the original which shot 4 to 6 inches low for me. The new sight blade measures .215" in height, which is pretty close to the old MIM sight I think. I wonder if you were sent the wrong sight?

Most likely factory OEM. Looks the exact same as the original.
Location Snapshot said they didn't got any return from the ones they replaced.

Will see...
Sent my slide to them, great turn time. Down side this one just broke with less than 200 rounds down the pipe. So 2 front sight now in under 1000 rounds. Maybe the last Ruger I buy if this is their QC.
