Just bought a nice Ruger SR 22 but to my biggest surprise the " collapsible stock" does not collapse at all. I remove the screw holding the fake adjustment lever but the stock still wont come off the tube.

Its kinda weird ! does not seem to have adjustment holes in the tube rail either.

I guess I will need to buy a commercial buffer tube for it but is it the same tread ?

There is a small roll pin holding it in place. Knock that out and it will come off. The butt stock on your SR does not have the spring mechanism components to make it adjust. My fixed stock model still had the adjustment holes so no need for a new buffer just the stock of your choice. Mil spec or commercial is up to you as the threads that go into the receiver are the same on both models. Once you get the stock off if it has the adjustment holes as mine did just remember that mil spec is flat on the end of the buffer and commercial is angled before you order your new butt stock of choice. Hope that helps a little.

I bought the sr22 when IT first came to Canada and my stock didn't collapse either. I knocked out the retaining pin to remove stock but buffer tube didn't have the holes. Had to replace whole buffer tube and stock, also had to get gunsmith to thread the barrel. Brand new gun and cost another few hundred the first couple days.
