Alright so heres the dilemma. I am looking for a tactical 22. I have been all for the SR22 since it is non-restricted, but the more I think about it the reason for buying a AR styled 22 is for the feel and ergonomics of a full size AR, but cheaper to shoot and more affordable. Which makes me start to think now maybe I should just go with the M&P even though it is restricted. I am just looking for some input on this in what you think I should go with maybe help make me pick one or the other. I just ordered a SR9 so most of my shooting will be done at a approved range now anyways. And again my main purpose of this is for the feel of an actual AR and not or would be used little for out hunting grouse with the SR22.
So I have two options SR22 and wait till I can afford a full size AR (which would be a few years, damn school debt) or just by the M&P to plink with until then. Whats your guys view and or what did you choose if you were in this position?

Just so you know; The 25 round mags for the M&P are now banned. Apparently they are classed as "prohibited pistol magazines".

I did not know this. So can you still find the 25rd mags in Canada?

Other thing would be any restricted AR-15 styled guns for a decent price and good quality that may spark my interest and make me hold off a little longer for it.

Well do you want one to take out and shoot with your buddies or one you can one only shoot at a range, and have more hassle owning?

Personally I'd get the sr22 for the sole fact that your able to get way more use

Honestly, I can't see the point of buying the M&P, don't get me wrong it's a nice gun, but I couldn't put up with the fact that I'd have to take that to the range just to shoot. I don't know about your situation, but the range is FAR and costly for me, meanwhile I have 33 acres of land to just shoot and shoot and shoot. If I were to shoot at a range I'd want to make it really worth what I'm gonna go through. Now once again, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying .22's aren't worth it but I'd rather go to a range to shoot an AR15 in .223 or some .45's and 9's rather than the .22LR that I can pop off endlessly with a 15 minute drive.

Ya thats what directed my attention to the SR22 in the first place. Im basically buying it for practice with the weapons and just out of interest with AR15's and the ability to take some pretty cool courses with them. It is more of a personal discretion on what I want the rifle for and what I can do with it. I plan to go into Law Enforcement in the near future if all goes well and then where I go to shoot wont be as much on an issue. Especially with a universal ATT although I do not know the full details on those. Just want to here some input and what others may have done or would do in this situation. +1 for the SR22

I went with the SR... and even though I go to the range more often than crown land, it's a treat to not have to think about restricted's in my vehicle if they don't need to be.. if i decide to stop off at a friends place after shooting at the range, no probs with the SR and a shotty in the back of the truck... If however I've got a pistol with me, pain in the neck!
and ... 25+ rd mag, duh :)

The issues with the S&W magazines and our "awsome" Canadian gun laws is fairly well known to both us, and, I'm sure S&W. I suggest not lining their pockets any further until they address the Canadian situation with some solution which will allow high capacity magazines the way they were intended.

Good input guys basically what I was thinking myself. As much as I would love to have an AR or the M&P it just doesn't beat being able to take the SR22 out anywhere you want. I think it will have to do.

i had both..sr is bullet proof and just plain works and is un restricted. I just sold my M&P,can only use it at the range and had alot of jamming using alot of different type of ammo. plus the deal with the mags was irriatating me too

I did not know this. So can you still find the 25rd mags in Canada?

It is appalling that owners were not notified about the reclassification. Every gun sold prior to that decision came with a 25 rnd magazine that is now prohibited. All 15-22 owners were therefore effectively criminalized by the government.

You can probably still find a 25 rnd mag, but it is now prohibited and therefore illegal to use. Although it's unlikely, you could face criminal penalties for possessing one.

Your choices are to acquire a pinned mag, or get one of the 10 rnd "accessory" mags that S&W produce. Or, as someone mentioned, a 50 rnd drum magazine.

I would still go with the SR-22 ,Non Restricted

Pretty much says it all. I liked the M&P better, but I bought the SR-22.

Ya I think I have made up my mind to just stick with the SR-22. Still has potential for some customizing as the M&P. Nice to know that the M&P was having issues loading I never knew that. Appreciate the info

i went with the smith and wesson.. my mags are prohib now...and i need to either pin them or get new ones... i don't have any problems of it jamming or anything. i ran cci blazers and they are fine.

My son has the SR22 and it has impressed me.
It is a reliable Ruger 10/22 inside but metal exterior.
Picatinny rails mean most AR15 components mount up.
Add a couple 25 round black Hot Lips mags and enjoy.

.

.
Its illegal to own, and you can bet your ass they would charge someone , as owning a prohibited Device would be ground to revoke your PAL and there for confinscate your guns..................... remember who made them prohibited

I've been looking at the black .22's for a while , decided on the SR 22 for the non-restricted status, reliability and parts availability , wanted one in the worst way.

In the end though I bought a Ruger 10-22 Tactical Stainless today from Frontier.
Slightly longer (2") barrel
folding adjustable stock with a cheek rest you can adjust,
came with a single 10 and a 25 round steel lips mag
proper iron sights,
red dot included.
1.5 lbs lighter than the SR.
$100 less than an SR22

I just thought it was a better value.
Hmmm, I might have the last one in stainless, the blued one still shows available.
