I have read lots of threads on here about both rifles.

I guess it boils down to this, a 597 vtr is 425 bux
the ruger sr22 is 550 bux

Which is the better rifle, I am thinking the ruger is less prone to having issues, based solely on what I have read in these forums.

My only semi 22 experience is with a browning 22, and it never seems to jam or ftf.

Help!!

Can't help you with the Remington, but I can say that my Ruger has never failed me.

I've owned quite a few .22s (Marlin, Savage, Win. etc.) but my Ruger is by far my favourite with the Marlin a close second. I would suggest that with a .22 your better investment is in good ammo - I have had nothing but issues with Remington .22 ammo (generally getting at least 2-3 crap rounds out of 50).

I have switched over to CCI Stingers and have never looked back.

I think my next rimfire rifle is going to be Ruger 22Mag.

Spend the dollars - you'll be much happier.

The tactical look is the only real difference between the SR22 and a standard 10/22. Same action, same barrel, just more tacti-cool.

I want an SR 22, but I'll probably "settle" for a regular 10/22 and then drop in a Tapco or Archangel stock afterwards.

I have to tell you I know their are a lot of die hard ruger fans hear and their should be the 10/22 is a great little gun but..... I have a vtr and... love it! it works flawlessly with cci and blazers ammo it looks and feels good in the hands and for the price difference between the two you can get a few accesories to go with your new remington vtr. just my .02 cents

I have dropped a ton of money, more than 600 into a 10/22 archangel build. I probably wouldn't of if the sr22 was available at the time I started. But I enjoy building it, fitting all the parts detail striping the action ect...

Go with the sr22 man, the extra money will be well worth it. The 10/22 action is the best of the best of all the .22lr semi auto actions. Plus the sr22 just looks cooler than the 597 in my opinion.

Sorry, just need to vent frustration...
Calling ontario gun shops
Not naming any names, but bp something told me they won't be carying them because they are tactical...
I asked of they sold aftermarket ruger 10/22 stocks and barrels, and he said, "oh my yes, all kinds of styles and lengths"
wtf...moron

Another shop here told me they are illegal to sell in Canada... riiight

Everyone else doesn't know, doesn't care, or wants around 700...

D'oh

I'll keep calling...nobody wants my money, Looks like I'll have to order from out west.

You are correct, the Ruger is a better rifle. The 125.00 extra is a steal for the difference in reliability.

I take it you have both rifles? or is this just hear say? The VTR as well as regular 597s work just fine . The problem with the 597 is the guide rods are 2 tight , when you get the gun home from the store and clean it as you should simply losen the guide rods 10 seconds max. I fired 280 rounds out of my VTR with different varitys of ammo ,30rnd mags and factory 10 rnd mags and not one hick up, I bought the VTR so I could test it as I read people would ##### and complaine about them . I also have a few other 597's as well and the issue was the guide rods ,Loosen them.

Also have the sr-22 as well again Very relable as well as all the other 1022's I own and have owned .

The gun that wins the race between the 2 is the one with more accessories and the one that looks cooler .

Both will be reliable and both have there own problems that will arrise and all will get a stove pipe, ftf, fte from time to time

This is like the AK or AR debate or any other firearm debate for that matter. Like BCboy said. Each have there advantages & disadvantages. 597's are cheap and accurate but they need a look over once you get it. 10/22 are more money, more add-ons & have way more info out there because they have been around forever.
Sorry threads like this just make me want to :bangHead:

That 10/22 cost just 500 for base rifle,Tapco stock, tasco red dot, VQ extractor, Buffer, Power Custom hammer, sling and high cap mag.

If the info can help someone out I am happy, (not meaning to sound like a prick ,sorry if I do ) but I get frustrated when people give advice that dont have the facts or first hand experience to back up there statements. Lots of time there is a very simple fix to problems , and Semi's usually have a gremlin or two.

"dont get that gun it is crap because I know a guy whos sister dated a guy and his brothers dad, worked with another guy whos kid had one and it jammed on him"

You said it x2

Sr22

I'm holding out for the SR-22 for a couple main reasons.

First of all, already having a 10/22, it standardizes my magazines. I have no experience with the 597 or its aftermarket magazines, however, I definitely have no complaints with my butler creek steel lips.

Second reason is as I stated above, I have no experience with the 597 platform, it may be good, but I am not going to gamble on it. I have been extremely impressed with the reliability of my standard carbine 10/22, so for that reason, and my inventory of hi-cap magazines, the SR-22 is the only choice for me. This is strictly my own opinion. If i were starting out fresh, it would be a tougher decision for sure.

With that kind of common sense approach and rationalization you will certainly get flamed on here...lol I agree, for a person that already runs a 10/22 with mags and accessories then the SR is a natural fit indeed.
