Hello, I have a Ruger SR9 and want to buy a red laser light for target shooting. Looking at spending around $100 - $200. It has a standard picatinny rail and I'm looking for just a red light laser. I'm in the GTA and would like to get it from a store but would buy online if stores availablely was limited. Thanks.

Green is the way to go. Still not great outside in bright sunlight but way brighter then red.
If you don't mind a bigger unit Marstar has some NCstar units on sale right now that work well and have a good warranty.

The quick release style ones may or may not fit tight on your rail.... I have both a quick release style and a screw type clamp model. The screw clamp is more forgiving for different sized rails. I'll check later tonight and see if the quick release style works well on the SR9.

The thing I like about NCstar is they can use rechargeable cells, they are inexpensive and have a lifetime warranty according to John from Marstar..... :)

I don't use mine much at the range, more for dryfire practice but they would make sense on a designated defense shotgun for night time animal control depending on your surroundings and habitat.

I recently purchased a Bushnell TRS25 from Amazon. It was a little over $100.00 & shipping was free.

I am very pleased with the way this red dot performs.

OP is looking for a laser, not a red dot sight.

My advice is to stay away from anything on eBay. I bought a laser/flashlight combo once and it was useless. Would drain a pair of new CR123 batteries inside of 30 seconds.

Tried the quick release NCStar green on my SR9..... fits like a glove nice and tight!
Here's a picture of what it looks like on a compact SR9.... on the full size SR9 the end of the slide/muzzle is flush with the little tab that is sticking out in front and below where the rail is. This tab is the spring loaded locking tab that engages with the notch in the rail.
If I was working SWAT or some other profession where I needed a laser on my gun I'd probably spend more money but for dryfire practice and joe homeowner the NCStar is well made for the price! I see the sale units Marstar had have sold out but even at the regular price it's a good deal. Canada Ammo also sells them but does not always have stock.

The cheap NC Star lasers are fine on a handgun but I would not mount them on a shotgun.
I had a Sun Optic unit, which is basically a NC Star, mounted on the forward rails of my pump. After a few blasts with #7.5 target loads, the laser unit broke in half and spewed its guts. It was replaced under the lifetime warranty but I won't mount cheapie lights and lasers on anything bigger than a .223 now.
For handgun use, no problem and I agree, the green laser is extremely bright!

I'm not familiar with Sun Optics, did it look like the one above in the picture? # 7.5 Target loads are pretty mild. I haven't used mine on a shotgun but I can't imagine it breaking in half.... my concern would be more how the internal construction would fare under heavy recoil.

My Sun Optic is a light/ laser combo unit. We were doing a tactical shotgun course, blasting clays and the unit blew apart. The light was dangling. The laser still worked. No, it doesn't look like yours. But they are Chinese made units of similar price and lifetime warranty so I would assume of similar reliability. I mount a Surefire on my shotgun now. Lesson learnt.
The Sun Optic sits on my 10/22. It's my rat hunter.

I was thinking Viridian for a while before I tried the NCstar, but I've heard of people having issues with Viridian and poor support in Canada.... plus the fact they don't recommend rechargeable cells was a turn off on a $300 plus laser.

Does the NcStar take a rechargeable RCR123 battery without any issues?

I thought I better double check.... :) I'm still using the factory battery on the smaller quick detach model and I just assumed it was a 123 battery like my original screw type clamp model. I guess it makes sense being a smaller unit, it takes a CR2 battery which I don't have rechargeable's for.

The longer non quick detach Green NCstar works well with Rechargeable 123's so I'm fairly confident the smaller unit will also run on rechargeable CR2's even though I haven't tried it yet. I will have to pick up some CR2's to try.

Thanks for your help. I got a NcStar green laser and it came in the mail today. Can't wait to get home and put it on my Ruger. Going to the range again on Friday to try it out.

I got a NcStar Compact green light laser at SFRC. They had it for a good price and not to bad to ship it. Came quick too.

Looks good, I use a disposable foam earplug slipped under the on off switch as a "safety" so the laser doesn't get bumped on when not being used.
