Ruger takedown 10/22 - accuracy really that poor?

K-roc

I Own both......papoose and ruger take down........both shoot great! Don't let the internet hype worry u too much. Buy the one u like best. Have fun with it. Both will do the same thing.........shoot small game dead. Both these guns will generally out shoot the guy holding it.

Best advice so far! I also read a lot online before purchasing, and most of the time, I back away from what I was going to buy. Then I end up buying it and am very happy with what I buy.

The accuracy, of my 10/22 ttd was OKish, packability was OKish and the faliure rate was at about 6%.

So I took a big chance and replaced it with an AR-7, that is more accurate, reliable, and fits in a small back pack. It is way more fun to shoot, less fussy to load, and I like the asymetrical stock.

In all honesty I didn't hate the ar7, but I thought it left a lot to be desired... didn't find mine very accurate, very cheap feel, mags were cheap, it didn't seem to like a lot of lower end ammo... it was very cool how it broke down and the overall design is great, to each his own.

I got a 10/22 stainless takedown and it can now shoot well. However initially I could not hit the paper at 25ft!

Adjustment to 10/22 takedown is mandatory for accuracy

1- tighten the rotating ring to secure the barrel once attached.
2- tighten the front restraining but to btw 20 and 30lbs (I am at 20lbs)

With sight I could then hit reactive targets fairly consistent with irons at 50 yards. I still plan to put a small scope or red dot on mine and will probably shoot better with that. Overall it's a pretty solid light gun and it will.be one of the rifles my daughter learns to shoot on.

Even with these adjustments my GSG15 is much more accurate and will throw 2 inch groups at 100m. Very impressed with that rifle. Still giving the 10/22 the benefit of the doubt till I scope it as well.

The barrel nut adjustment is critical as is ammo selection.
We tried ‘thunderbolts’ with dismal results.
Not entirely unexpected.
That ammo is crap.
Next up are some CCI solids.
We should be getting dime sized 5-shot groups at 50 yds with that 16” bull barrel.

Why anyone in their right mind would buy a take down rim rifle of any kind and then compare the accuracy to non take down models in beyond me or use them to try and get later accuracy. Again this is just my opinion. Personally I bought my take down 10/22 for a throw behind the seat of the truck and shoot the odd grouse, shoot some cans while camping and have the kids shoot some. Definitely not to shoot black flys off a fence at 100 yards away. Rediculous really. For those who hate their 10/22 take downs so much because they can't hit anything with it maybe PM K-roc and sell him yours for 50 bucks....... cause you think they are crap.......just sayn!!

I bought a new one and put a cheap $50 Tasco red dot on it. Works good enough for me. Carried it on the tractor/swather/combine for a while. Got knocked around a fair bit. Now I carry a cheapo Savage 64 with a Tasco red dot. It works okay for what I intend it to do. Minute of skunk is good enough.

That's because u bought a rifle and use it for its design. My point exactly!

Volquartsen makes a 16.5” lightweight carbon fiber barrel with a Picatinny rail installed up on top.
It looks like quite an investment @ $550.00. No doubt accurate but not for everyone.

I picked up a stainless TD just after Christmas last year, on sale for around $300 and I'm pleased with the accuracy with basic bulk ammo.

Good points lol!!!

Okay since I got a good bit of flak from those that doubt the rifles capabilities ............I shot a few more 5 round groups to show what the gun is capable of with Federal Champion 40 grain lead round nose.

I said a dime in my first post, but a NICKEL or better is what I shot for this set of groups.

If your rifle shoots poorly keep trying different ammunition and adjust the barrel ring till you get desired results.
