Hi GunnutZ,
I have a chance to buy a 95% condition Ruger 77 Ultralight in .257Roberts
Gun has all the blue around the muzzel and rated overall in excellent condition. This does not have a tang safty. A few light dings on the stock but in overall nice shape?

Anyone familiar with these?
Thanks!
Tikka

You can't go wrong with the Roberts. I currently have 2 of them, a 77mkII and a BLR. You will loose a bit of velocity with the 20" bbl but it will be still OK. It comes alive if you reload and if you are interested I have a set of like new RCBS dies.
257 Roberts

I have the Hawkeye in the Roberts. Great rifle. I'm not a huge fan of ultralight rifles, but at a decent price, I'd grab that rifle.
Winchester, Federal and Remington all load the Roberts. Ammo is not difficult to find as long as you don't try to get it at Canadian Tire. The easiest on recoil is the Remington 117-grainer, the only non-+P load.

Have you handled a M77MKII Ultralight yet? I hate the foreend design. I was looking at the same rifle/cartride combo myself but I think I'll stick to the non ultralight version

I used to have the exact same rifle and made the mistake of selling it. Sweet to carry and very versatile hunting rifle. If you don't buy it let me know where it is I just mighht do it. One word of caution though, when working up loads be very patient as the barrel does heat up fast. Means nothing in a hunting scenario. Ellwood Epps sells them brand new for $778.00 and that includes rings.

Yes i have handled it and seem to like it. Light, compact and seems to pull to my shoulder well.. I like it!

If you're looking for a perfect little whitetail carbine with coyotes and wolf on the side, that's it.

My main purpose of buying this Ultrlight was to outfit my Boy with a lightwieght deer gun. I will probably buy it tomarrow. Another one that i was thinking about is a Rem 700 model 7 in 7mm-08 .

Thanks for your input guys.

A model 7 in7-08 is also a great rig that the kid can actually hunt moose with if that ever becomes an issue. I would have the lad try both on for "fit" that is going to determine how well he shoots it. Make sure he's wearing his hunting coat when he try's them on.

I have a model 7 in .308 but would not want him to start with that. the recoil may turn him off . I think the 7mm-08 would be a good starter deer gun as well.
I may have to toss a coin....LOL!

The 7-08 and .257 are very close in recoil. Only about a pound difference means nothing really. The .257 will allow him to hunt varmints and the 7-08 will allow him to hunt bigger game also. Which has more utility for you?

I think we are covered well in Varmint calabers. My boy and i like to shoot the Rem700 LVSF in .204Ruger and the 223.
Although i like the 257Robert , i think he may grow into the model 7 and may end up taking it moose hunting as well.... Not really a big deal as i have other big game guns that he can use when he grows a few inches, & puts on a few pounds. I just want him to get familiar with his deer rifle before he goes hunting with me in a few years from now.
Thanks for all your help!

Hey there!
I would like to collect these Ultralights as well. What chamberings were offered over the years. I see these are discontimued by Ruger as of this year. I have not shot it yeat but hope it shoots as good and it feels.

Ya! currently i have five VXIII 1.5-5 on Marlin Guide gun 45-70
Rem Mohawk 308
Marlin 444P
760 Carbine 30-06
760 Carbine 308

I looked at the redfield today and was really impressed. Lots of eye relief and optics look to be really clear. Maybe not as clear as a VXIII but great value for a 180.00 to 230.00 price range they come in 2-7x33MM
3-9x40 and 50MM
4-12x40MM
The only down fall is they only come in Matt. I would like a gloss scope for this Ruger Ultrlight.

Had an Ultralight in 308. Loved to carry it and it shot really well once the trigger was done.
Only detractors were weight bias was back with the whisper thin barrel, making it hard to steady for offhand. Muzzle blast was the other thing but it should not be as harsh with the Bob. The 308 was as loud as a rifle with a brake IMO.
