Ruger Vaquero - 44-40 - Advice Needed

Good news folks - step 1 completed. I managed to find some 44-40 ammo that someone no longer had any use for. Look forward to working through this puzzle. Thanks for all the input.

I have a side question for the CAS guys, is having two pistols mandatory? I would like to try it at some point but only have one revolver.

yes. you need two pistols. wonder if they will make new rules for canada as a lot of people may not be able to get into it now... if you are lucky you may find someone that will loan you a second during the matches...

freddyfour: It is still possible to compete in non-sanctioned, club level matches, with only one revolver. The category is loosely known as "Working Cowboy". It is possible that this category may be included among SASS recognized categories in the future. There appears to be some discussion about including it.

In the meantime, if you can borrow a revolver(Usually not a problem), you can compete normally, at any sanctioned event.

I have yet to shoot at any club that won't accommodate shooters in the "Working Cowboy" category, at any of their regularly scheduled(club level) matches. So, if you show up and wish to shoot with only one pistol, I doubt anyone will complain. Your match score may not be all that great....but who cares. As long as you participate and have a good time. That's all that counts, anyway.

Hope this helps

Al

ps: Since you're in Brant county...there are several very good clubs in the general area. Go to the OSASF website, for match details. I believe Burlington is already starting its winter indoor schedule. The outdoor summer season has just wrapped up for most others. But, you can start planning for next year.

I will check it out, I believe HAHA, which is relatively close, used to host events when I was a member there many years ago. Always looked like fun times! Still need to get a holster as well, that will be the final piece of the puzzle.

Sorry for the high jack....just to stay somewhat relevant with the OP, my Single actionand rifles are 44-40 as well. Keep it classy

freddyfour: HAHA did host some matches, up until a few years ago. Unsure of any future plans to re-start.

Indoor matches are currently being held at Burlington and Wentworth(Hamilton). Then, there's Crumlin(London), Dunnville and Decew(Thorold), over the summer months. Lambton Sportsmans Club(Sarnia) and Chatham(indoor), a bit further afield, to round things out. Plenty of shooting activity to fill the year. The OSASF website will have all the details.

As far as shooting leather goes, my advice is to purchase the best quality rig you can afford. Stay away from the cheap stuff. It will only cause you headaches and let you down at the worst possible time. Cowboy action shooting guns and gear see a lot of hard use, wear and tear. Including gun leather. So, be sure to invest wisely right from the start.

ps: The .44-40 is a real class act, in the sport. Absolutely period correct. If you also like shooting black powder, it's a natural.
