Rugers Gone Wrong

X2 .... The Model 11 223 is a great shooter beater ATV rifle and the 22LR HB is perfect for the kids at the range.

..... not to mention that the inletting on the bolt handle is head and shoulders better on the Savage over the Ruger. :)

Good day guys, first post on CGN although I have been lurking for years. The squarish cut out for the bolt handle was done for the original flat bolt Rugers. I own a flat bolt in 6mm Rem. ( manufactured in 1969). Bill Ruger owned a David LLoyd rifle and if you Google LLoyds' rifles you will see where got his idea for the original bolt handle. But for sure when Ruger re-contoured the bolt handle they certainly should have re-contoured the handle cut-out

But then... the inletting is on a Savage...

One of the ugliest looking bolt actions in production IMO. The action looks hideous:puke:

I dunno, really...the M77's/Hawkeyes, whatever they call them today are made as cheap as possible, cast/mim everything, only machine and polish the parts you can see above and below the stock line, everything else left as cast. Only part on them that is forged is the barrel, the retail price on them is ridiculous, horrible inlets for the bolt handle is the least of the issues.
But that's just my take, never liked them, lots of better made rifles out there for far less money.

Hey, Paul... how do you feel about the "vulva" on this one???

It's just to bad Savage bolt actions are so FUGLY, otherwise they shoot very well.

Well my tanger is with Mitch for bedding, stock painting and Gunkoting. Too good of a rifle not to bring into the elements. Cast or not, these M77's sport strong actions, operate smoothly and shoot great. Hopefully Mitch can tweak my bolt handle inletting.

Liked the lines of the Ruger 77's, back in the tang safety days, had a couple of them. Last one was right around the time of the registry implementation, when places like Sears, Woodwards and Cdn tire were getting out of them and had some not bad sales. Picked up one, 7RM, syn stock, tang safety, 1-8" twist bbl. Liked it a lot, couldn't crack 3k with it and a 160gr, just over 2900 was all I could get. Took it out moose hunting, had a gimme shot on a bull, empty chamber, full mag, cycled it, nice and easy, click, opened it, nothing in chamber, had to reach and push bullet down to get the base up, for it to pick it up. Tried it a few more times, messed with the mag spring, still did it if loaded to max cap and closed the bolt over it. Checked it in probably 50 other guns over a year or two after that, at the range, see one I hadn't checked, check it, all did the same, various cartridges. Lot of the owners were surprised by that. I'd gotten rid of that gun PDQ the next spring, already had a 700 in 7-08 I used instead, then bought another 700 in 338WM to replace the 7RM. So, only Ruger I have bought since, was a #1.

That was just a worn mag spring. Mine did that. I ordered a new one (MkII spring is the same part) and the problem went away. Cheap and easy fix.

I have had literally hundreds of Ruger bolt action rifles and never run into that problem once.
