Rugged and reliable?

There's a reason Moscow allowed to Czechs to keep using their home grown VZ58 rather than adopt the AK47 like all other Warsaw pact countries.

I hear those VZ's are pretty good. The nice thing is that you can get the Unrestricted ones!!!! :D

a friend of mine once dropped my vz into a pile of sand (clutz) and he proceeded to fire it even though the barrel and trigger areas had some sand in them. functioned fine, no problems. same with snow as well.

I own the VZ but not the AK.....i have held the AK in my hands before, but haven't shot it.....
The VZ seems to be better quality built, lighter and from what i hear the AK isn't as accurate as the VZ.....
The drawback of the VZ of course is, that it wasn't produced in great numbers like the AK....

I have a VZ and have shot an AK several times. Both seem to be well built, sturdy guns. I don't know in the long run how the VZ will stand up to hard use. (I've only put about 1000 rds through mine) where I know the AK will last forever. They both seem to shoot OK, the AK that I shot seemed to be a bit tighter than my VZ. But, here in Canada, I CAN legally own and shoot my non restricted VZ anywhere, while I can't even touch let alone shoot an AK. If AK style guns turn you on, then get a VZ. Its about as close as you can get here in Canada to the real thing. And they're a lot of fun too.

Believe it or not, there is something a lot closer to an AK that is non prohib, and looks like a full blown military AK-74 ;)

Cheers,
Alex

Back in the day I wrangled a Norinco Type 56.

I can't say that it has any advantages over a VZ58, except that the Norkie also was chambered in 5.56. Long term, 1-1 they are both about equal.

There is absolutely no answer for that question. VZ was never used in such a veriaty of conditions and situations as AK. I doubt that VZ was used in a military conflict ever. We KNOW that AK is bloody reliable. But we THINK that VZ is not too bad. :)

Personnally i think Vz are almost as reliable than an AK. Tzech army a been deploying in a veriety of theather with this rifle. It is presently issued to new Afghan police force, so it must be reliable in a desert environment. I think if i would have to choose between the AK and the VZ i would pick the later. The VZ as all the characteristics the AK misses:

-Hold open device after last round fired
-Ambidexous charging handle
-Safety/fire selector not the best but waaaay faster to operate than the AK
-Smaller overall package
-Recoil management a lot better than the AK in my opinion

Of course the VZ has certains flaws compared to the AK:

-More complicated mechanism, smaller parts, harder to dissasemble
-No as simple to operate compared to the AK for a third world country un-educated fighter
-Price tag a little higher

How long did it take you to learn to talk out of your ass?

:D

AKs Pros
-Better trigger mech
-Better mags and mag release

Vz pros
-Better gas system
-Mag charger built into bolt carrier
-You can put a folding stock on it easily
-Bolt catch

AK cons
-Safetys in a bad place
-no bolt catch

Vz cons
-Weak mags
-Mag release is small
-Trigger mech has small flemsy parts and a Gremlin here and there
-Fire selector in a bad place "unless your a lefty" but better then the AK

All in all I think the AKs better but since I cant own one I like my Vz58:)

Yawn.

Anything on the subject?

I'll bite, the Vz was used as "aid" to many of the same terrorist er revolutionary groups that received the AK. The reason you don't see so much about it is the same reason most Yanks don't know there are Canadians in Afghanistan. Not number 1 means no media time. The Czech army has been using the Vz58 for close to 50 years, if it was sh*t it wouldn't have lasted. The fact that it outlasted the AK47, AKM, and is still in use in the era of the AK74 is likewise interesting. If the AK had been that much superior I'm sure it would have been adopted somewhere along the line, at least by special ops units.
