Hey

i just got myself a rugger 10/22 (great little gun) and i was wondering if anyone knows if i can legally file the pin in the bolt release metal plate thingy to make it so that i can release the bolt from its locked position just by pulling it back (instead of having to mess with the button underneath the gun)

if you dont really know what im talking about here is what i mean http://www.instructables.com/id/Ruger-1022-DIY-Auto-Bolt-Release/#step1

btw i live in quebec.
thank you :)

There's no legal reason not to do it. It simply eliminates the need to toggle the bolt release, but still requires the deliberate move of pulling the bolt rearward. Just make sure you modify it correctly. There's better illustrations of what the end result should look like. Don't make the area flat or it may not work. It needs to be curved. Go to rimfire central for an illustration of how it should look. A dremel and a small round file make for easy work.

No legal reason not to do it...I feel it should be this way from the factory

very cool :) any other simple and easy to do mods i can do to my 10/22 to make it more acruate, feed better or just in general more reliable?

Most center fire semi auto's from handguns to rifles have the ability to release the locked back slide by pulling the bolt or slide backward, thereby relieving tension on the slide lock, and releasing the bolt or slide.

I don't know if you call it safety or pia but the accidental release is annoying, when cleaning and such. When changing mags, there is no bolt hold open so the mod is no help there, And of course some guys gonna shoot someone when he slides a loaded 10 round mag in the gun and carries it with the bolt locked.......... add an extended charging handle for fun.
I have had them and in my opinion you can release the bolt fine when necessary.
Did it, went back to stock and learned how to use that release better.

I'd love to hear the reasoning behind this.

You realize almost every other semi auto has the same type of auto bolt release right? I'd hardly consider it a safetyissue!

As far as not having a bolt hold open, the 10/22 does, it is just manual. You lock the bolt open, and it is just easier to release it, not having to screw around with the release latch.

As for inserting a mag with the bolt open and shooting someone, I have no idea what your talking about. Like I said every other semi would be just the same, and I don't hear about all these people getting shot because of a bolt release.

Why would you carry a gun with the bolt locked open anyways? And how does that result in someone getting shot?

Doesn't make any sense to me..........

without auto bolt release you need to pull the bolt back and push a little button underneath the gun then let the bolt slide foward... auto bolt release you just pull the bolt back and thats it... the button is tiny and its a huge pain in the ass to deal with...i do wish there was a last round lock the bolt open type thing going on with the 10/22 but other then that i am 100% happy with it

Anyone that walks around with a mag in and the bolt held open as a safety is a tard, not only that but when a critter scurrys into range you have to fumble with that god awful design, then end up throwing the rifle as far as you can. A smarter person would close the bolt on an empty chamber, gracfully pull and release the bolt when presented with a shot.

However to be completely honest, i regret doin the mod myself. I dont think ive ever used the hold open besides cleaning, and cleaning is a pita now. Tickle the bolt with the cleaning rod and it slams shut. This mod did nothing positive for me but others with a habit of locking the bolt open frequently may benifit.

i dont see how making this mod made your cleaning any harder... can you elaborate on this please? also yes i agree with you anyone using an open bolt as a safety is a retard

I guess these guys are cleaning from the muzzle, and when the rod pops through it hit's the bolt causing it to close.

Personally that is a dumb way to clean, and a clean boresnake is much easier for in the field/range cleaning.

At home I have drilled a hole in the rear of the receiver to allow for a cleaning rod to be inserted from the breach, when the bolt is removed.

I don't feel like damaging my custom barrel with rods at the muzzle. ;)

I don't use it often, as I always load a mag on a closed bolt for consistency, but at my range guns have to be put on the rack when the range is safe with bolt open. So it does make it easier to start shooting again.

In the field, hunting, it really doesn't make a huge difference either way.

Remember there is a last round bolt hold open mod for the 10/22, so..........

The best use for the mod would be combined with the bolt hold open mod, that holds the bolt open after the last round.

Combined they make the gun function like it should, just like every other gun.
