Still trying to track down why my last batch of reloads went all wonky. In particular the wide spread of velocity.

In the picture are a random sampling of Federal Match Large Rifle Primers I bought at a gun show two years ago.

You'll notice that, the two seperated from the group are green. While everything else is red.

I'm assuming this is not normal.

What do you think?

And if they are junk. Should I junk the whole batch or just the green ones?

When you said earlier the primers were green, I just assumed they were all green, and were supposed to be like that. That's messed up! Those came from the same box? In my short time reloading, I've never seen the same primers, supposedly, be different colors.

The 215M (Federal Match Magnum) that I used tonite have Yellow under the anvil and a purple spot in the middle of the anvil.

I have just started using Federal Primers so I will definitely keep an eye out for this sort of color variations.

I wonder if some primers from one lot got mixed into the box from another lot at the factory or from the person you bought them from? Maybe some are not what they say they are.....maybe pistol or Magnum primers got mixed in there. Looks very suspect to me.

EDIT:

Took a pic of some of my Federal Primers and a CCI 200 LR Primer as a comparison.

The Fed 210 in the pic is not a Match primer, it is a standard Large Rifle Primer.

Also note that both the Small Match and LR Mag Match Primers have a Yellow/Green compound with purple on the anvils.

Looks like someone forgot the sealer, this could cause contamination. Try loading only the red ones and see if it improves your shooting. I would chuck any that are green even partially but not the whole box, then again I am something of a cheap basterd.

It was "sealed" in that it had some scotch tape on the boxes.

Hmmm, mixed magnum and normal primers eh?

Would that explain the sometimes 200fps jump in velocity? Would magnums add that much more umph? Because looking at them, they do appear kinda like Cyan1de's Federal Magnum Matches.

Maybe I'll sort out the green / yellow from red and see if firing only reds does the job.
