I have 'heard' that MP-40 mags fit in a STEN gun but STEN mags dont fit an MP-40

Is this true/false/total BS?

How can a mag that fits one gun not fit another like this?

Could a STEN mag be MADE to fit a '40?...(there may be a '40 for sale sometime soon...ooooo:runaway: )

Mags

Klunk,
I just checked. The sten mag is too long (front to back). The MP 40 mag is too wide( side to side).
So no interchangeability.

I'd tell you - but knowing of your obsession with blued/parkerized/painted metal parts, and keeping in mind that you have to eat....I can't tell you....:D

I heard that DaveGP once built an FG42 out of a showerhead and an old .22 Cooey, does that count?

I've seen that gun ......

I wondered why I was having flashbacks while showering this morning .... :p

A sten mag will fit and function in a sterling SMG, but a sterling mag won't lock in or function without modification into a sten. This was purposely designed in to the Sterling SMG as a selling feature for countries who had large amounts of sten mags on hand but wanted to upgrade their guns.

I've seen this question about sten/MP40 interchangeability before, and the answer was no. I haven't tried it myself mind you, so don't want to call anyone a liar.

well the germans did convert MANY ppsh 41's to 9mm and with a magwell insert to take mp40 mags

any proof they did this with captured stens??

Collector Grade pub 'Desperate measures' says:

"the British had intentionaly dimensioned the STEN magazine housing so that a German magazine would fit, but the British magazine will not fit in an MP-40"

Anybody have any STEN mags available...one will do

I've got it on pretty good authority that what you heard is true. The sten was designed so that they could use battlefield pickup MP40 mags if the need arose, but not the other way around for obvious reasons. I've compared the 2 side by side and the sten mag is indeed a couple mm wider longer(front to back) than the MP mag. The MP40 mag will fit and function in a sten, but not vice-versa! I wonder if the German copy of the sten(appears identical, but with a vertically positioned mag)takes sten mags?

Oooo...MP3008...now that would be a find

I doubt it handled STEN mags either, as it was designed to take MP-40 mags

Interesting observations gents but I have both a C/A 1944 longbranch Sten and a C/A 1942 BNZ mp40, both with original mags.
The magazines are NOT interchangeable!
