So, I'm sitting here reading CGN about an hour ago and I hear gravel crunching on my laneway. Car I don't know pulls up next to the house and some guy gets out and introduces himself as somebody who hunts deer on the property that backs onto mine. Asks if I've had a problem with 'yotes. I tell him that I've heard more around this year, and even seen a couple. Then he asks if he can set up to hunt them, since he's afraid they will kill all the deer. We run an equestrian centre on 40 acres, dealing mainly with higher level competition horses. He wants to set up in some trees next to my house and call them in. I tell the guy that it's probably not a good idea that he's banging away with rifles when clients are riding horses, which goes on pretty much from 8am until 9pm. Not to mention that my dogs would likely not view this too favourably since they think it's their job to run off any 'yotes. Guy gets all indignant and says he's just going to have to bait them with poison. Told him that if my dogs die as a result, he's going to be hearing from my lawyer. Took down his license plate info. Any suggestions on how else to have handled it ?

You must know the folks next door, if so , I would voice my findings to him or her. It may be that the folks next door do not know of this fella's intent.
This really pisses hunters off, when a rude person acting like a hunter is acting in this manner....good luck and please do not paint all hunters with the same brush, I for one would not want to be shooting off guns close to horses, unless I was the owner, and knew the animals...

He was obvioulsy an idiot. You did the right thing. Don't know oNt. law but sprinkling poison around is likely frowned upon under your wildlife act.
No chance in hell that those yotes will have any impact on the local ungulate population. They will however make rodent infestation in your barns far less likely.
I'd call your nieghbour and let him know what kind of nut he has using his land.

As a note, if your dogs go down to poison put on his property, it's your fault for not maintaining domestic animals on your own property. And as much as people love their dogs, in the end they are domestic animals you are responsible for keeping on your own property. If that's a fear, you should have worked with him in some way, like maybe setting up farther away or something. Threatening with lawyers isn't very neighborly, in fact, looks to me like he was trying to be proper and asked permission. Is that how it's done in Ontario? Maybe invite a neighbor in for coffee and speak on it, that's how I do it back in the flat lands.
Coyotes also like to get newborn horses and cattle. Any chance to get rid of them is a bonus. It's nothing during calving season, if a cow births away from the yard in the dark to have 20 coyotes trying to get at the calf and afterbirth. I suspect it's the same with horses.

As an update, unless wolves are in the area, coyotes are a top predator for deer. Wolves take down moose and elk, and the size difference is greater than coyotes to deer by many times. Why do people find it difficult to believe coyotes take deer?

He could have handled it much better. Like asking your membership if there is a convient day of week, or a few day stretch that he could remove the threat of the yotes to the horses for them.

I might have misunderstood but it sounds like the guy wanting to shoot coyotes isn't the neighbor, just someone who deer hunts on the near chunk of land. Not sure how it would be his business to put out poison other than to be a prick. He's going to charm his way on to alot of land that way.

1) Is poison legal?
2) Talk to MNR.
3) Talk to the other property owners. Hopefully they see your side and if no-one wants this guy dropping poison on thier property he has to go away.
4) Talk to the police. Get it on the record with them you do not want this guy or his guns or his poison on your property. The police will have a long talk with him when you mention firearms and clients (CHILDERN) in the same sentence.
5) As a business you and your dogs are not nearly as important as your clients and thier horses, you have a duty to provide a higher level of care to them or at least warn them of the possible danger.

Yeah, this guy is not my neighbour, just some asshat he lets hunt on his land. Not too worried about the 'yotes going after the horses. We got out of breeding a few years ago and now do mostly training for competition. Horses are primarily European warmbloods (read...pretty damned big) and mostly have hind shoes on, so even a glancing kick would likely kill or cripple a coyote. I see the odd one or two around, certainly not packs like in some places out West. More concerned about the possiblility of a client getting dumped off a horse spooking. Property is mostly fields with thin treelines in between, so I'm also worried about him taking a shot at a 'yote and somebody being out in a field behind the trees that he doesn't see. Just not a good situation for rifles. That's why I've given up hunting with anything other than a bow around here.

Im sorry, but poisoning is cruel and inhumane and has absolutely zero to do with gun rights and freedoms. If someone poisoned yotes/wolves on my property, I wouldnt have a second thought about reporting them.
