Starts with a P, but it's the Preobrazhensky March. Named after the first regiment of guards formed by Peter the Great: The Preobrazhensky Guards. The Semenovsky were second IRRC.

The uniforms are from the Napoleonic era. The goose step of course is not! :D
 
I would like it if Canada saved the Enfields the Rangers are using and used them for ceremony like Russia uses the SKS and the US uses the M1 garand and the m14. Nothing is more classy then a nicely polished full wood stock rifle.

if you think about it in terms of the economic recession its possible that young people cant find jobs so they join the army for a year and then work on contract basis and get paid for it after a year

edit: oh yea and back on topic, apparently the reason they use sks is because its more aesthetic and better looking than the ak, doesnt the us honor guard also use an older "inferior rifle" (m14)

The one year term does seem like a make work program. Soldat gets housed, clothed & fed but I can't see draftee pay as a "living" wage.

The SKS is easy to do old style ceremonial drill with and has a decent style bayonet.

I think they still use them for cermonies and parades in Poland.If i'm not mistaken ceremonial rifles would have chrome finish on them.
 
Two things Russia has a lot of money because of Putin. I do not know where you get your information but I had to go for 2 years to serve in army and I am 99 % sure that it is still the same. If you go to University or College it is still two years to serve but you go as an officer.If you study until 27 or you have kids and wife you do not have to serve in army. If you have sickness that would make you unmissable to serve than you would not serve.
SKS is second choice of a rifle for Russian army. They have many new firearms that came out to the market nowadays, but SKS and AK47 are the one which were tested by time and war in many region. AK47 was voted as number one assault rifle. Does not meter what you do to this rifle it would still work. British spend over 200 million pounds for their rifle I think SAS80 or something but when it was compared to AK and SKS it lost big time. British soldiers would drop their very new and expensive rifle and pick up Russian because they want to survive. AK and SKS are still voted on the top 10 rifles in the world and those rifles were made in early 50th

Just curious when you were in the military, did they only use the SKS for drill or did support troops still get issued it?
