I doubt you could find a more effective fighting force in history then the men and women that have been serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Russians have had a lot of combat experience themselves over the last 18 years, against argueably better opposition. The run down state of their military has definately hurt them, but if they can reverse that they could end up having the most effective counterinsurgent/terrorist capabilities in the world given their superior intelligence services.
 
Many years ago I saw footage of a Delta hostage rescue team doing room clearing/HR drills. Unlike all the rest of specops in those days, these guys had aimpoints ON TOP of the old carry handles...giving it a higher than normal dot. And certainly not co-witnessed. Somehow the question came up, and the answer was this: a handful of American, Israeli Sayaret Matkal (sp?) and Autralian TAG hostage rescue teams run their dots higher than normal...because they regularly use gas-masks...and thus a normal cheekweld doesn't work through the eye ports.

Soooo...not necessarily as "unprofessional" as some of you assume. I'm guessing the guys in black uniforms are part of what used to be called either KGB "Alpha" or "Vympel"...who are the true elite in that country. "Spetnaz" is a bit too general a term when their numbers are over 15,000 soldiers...most would not exactly be in the same league as say Delta, Team6/DevGru, JTF-2 or the SAS. But Alpha and Vympel might be close.

Remember, they'd be the ones who had to sort through the mess at the Moscow theatre...with full breathing apparatus to avoid the sleeping drugs they pumped in there.

Good story, but the reason Delta were running aimpoints on carry handles in the early 90,s is simply, there were no flattop,s at the time.

The spec in the late 80,s and early 90,s if you were going with gas masks was Lasers or iron sites.
We now have the 45deg off set mounts in full swing now, so no need to have a High mounted optics.
Also Spec-ops + gas masks normaly = CQB so optics many times gets dumped.
Back when the MP5 was the tool of choice it was lights and lasers.
"light em up, Knock em down" as my boys back in the old country use to say.

Are you sure it was CGN? I would go ask the kids over at Airsoft Canada about their end user certs for all those PVS-14/15s, PEQ units, ect. ;)
