Russia To Destroy 4 Million Guns

I hate to say it, but the "out with the old and in with the new" is the way of the world. Canada is certainly guilty of the same thing, and yes, it absolutely pisses me off.

Having that said, I'm pretty sure most/many of these old rifles are Mosins or models of rifles that we can't have anyway. When you think about the $100 Mosin, much of the cost is shipping, handling, and middlemen before a profit margin is applied: what do they actually pay for the rifles out of the Ukraine? ten bucks each? So if you were the Russian in charge and had to choose between a massive amount of labor to save old outdated and unused rifles that are expensive to store, OR melt them down, keep your factories employed by recycling millions of pounds or quality gun metal to make modern and useful military arms, what would you choose?

I hate the idea of melting them down, but export restrictions and economics are dictating the actions here.

While I don't agree with it, I can understand how it sounds good to liberal crowds that police and military aren't going to sell off their gear and potentially put guns on the street. However, it's RUSSIA! They JUST threatened the United States. They obviously don't care thaaaattttt much that a bunch of rednecks in Canada will get to tweak their old mosins do they??

As you all well aware we are working on that M44 before it gets destroyed. YOU DON"T UNDERSTAND HOW HARD IT IS TO IMPORT FROM RUSSIA. It is easier to import from Afghanistan or Pakistan

What, can't find the right guy to bribe in Russia?????:D:D:D:D:D

(just yankin' your chain Sergey. I just bought a 91/30 from you and am totally impressed with the fast service I received, and the rifle itself)

How many Guns, Rifles, Pistols, Tanks, APC, etc, etc, etc has DND Canada sent to the smelter over the years?

Are we any better?

I worked Dofasco #1 Melt Shop for a few years. Those arms go in at about 6,000 - 9,000 at a time. Dropped into the furnace as scrape. Maganeese, sulpher etc added by the ton. A train car of liquid iron carried over and poured in. Oxygen lanced to 2,700 degrees. Slag removed then remainder off to the Pouring Decks. Finally poured into moulds as 10,000 pound ingots.
Hell, I was there.

That's Horrible!

That actually started last year by February 2011 they had melted down over 300,000 guns. No idea what the count is by now !

I'd make a compo claim that you have PTSD.

I wonder how many of the destroyed guns are actually being disposed of... on the Canadian market.

"...just sell them you idiots..." Not a chance. The Russians are why the Third World Debating Club wants to end the world trade in small arms. Even if they did sell 'em, it wouldn't be here.

Wow, it does seem to me that we've seen quite a few Mosins and SKS rifles come from Russia in the last few years. Some good stuff too.
Also, there have been a bunch of RC Mausers coming in.

I want to know where the Russians are hiding all the G43's they captured....

From what I recall hearing, G43's were hidden in salt mines by the truckload. There are thousands of crates, and the Russians know exactly what people are paying for them in their respective markets. It's just that no importer want's to pay that price because there is very little profit margin and selling them at that price takes too much time.

You are right. It all comes back to supply and demand. There are too many to get it ready for the market and little profit. Unless someone or a group gets together and make a bid to buy it all and comb through it. That also is a question if profitable.
