Hi everyone,

I'm in the market for a Russian 1945 sks, and have a few questions. I tried the search function but it did'nt turn up any results. Is this type of fire arm non restricted? Are they all cromed lined? And lastly, is it acceptable to take these to a range to fire without issues?

Prohibited. Chrome lined are junk, look for titanium lined. If you show up at a range with one you will be worshipped

Prohib and non res? Lol, Guess I better figure it out before I order one up. What I meant about the range issues was, Do ranges allow you to shoot semis such as the sks? I've always just used farm land up to this point, but with living in the city now, I don't have great access to farm land anymore

Hes just being a smart arse, no worries, no legit questions are dumb questions. It dependes on the range, if it can handle .30 cal rifle your good to go. Beware-Most surplus is mild steel core, you will have to ask if thats alright for the ranges backstop or not.

Yes most all the sks's you'll find are non-restricted, they are sporting a 20" barrel. Most of the russian ones and chinese ones are chrome lines, the yugo's are not. Russian and yugo are nicest for fit/finish but military grade chinese are still nice as well.

They sell like hot cakes in every gun shop and are very popular. I hunt deer with mine and have bagged several.

They are common at the range and are cheap to shoot. There is a good selection of military surplus non-corrosive ammo available now, but there is also alot of cheap "good" but "corrosive" com bloc ammo in circulation as well.

If you are unsure, clean your gun really well with boiling water and then normal cleaning and oiling procedures to remove residual salts left from the primers, otherwise your gun will rust up in the bore and gas system.

Buy one, enjoy it and shoot away!. Every Gun owning Canadian should have atleast one sks rifle.

They are rugged, reliable, simple and easy to maintain whats not to love?.

Sounds great, just gotta order one up now. Any one on here shoot with the ammo at Sibiald Flats? Ok with it or not? Are the problems with the pitting barrels like the Mosin Naglant follow over to the sks?

Just watch out.. Putting scopes, tripods and lights on it can turn it from non-restricted into prohibited

Just kidding and making fun of our mass media

Totally non-restricted.. When I bought mine, I just threw it in the back seat and took it home. Amazingly, a TPS constable looked into my car and I knew he could see it but didn't light up the cherries, just went off in a different direction (strange considering the strong neosocialist pressure on our municipal public service)

The search engine on this site is set at 1 week old posts...
You must change it for a longer period of time in the options, like 6 month olds threads and you will find tons of informations here !!!

For Russian SKS, 1945 to mid 1951 don't have chrome lined barrels and mid-1951 to 1955/56 have chrome lined barrels.

All Chinese SKS Military and Norinco have chrome lined barrels

All Yugo SKS don't have chrome lined barrels

If you plan to shoot corrosive ammunition, you will have to clean the rifle the same day, even if you have a chrome lined barrel, rust will ruin your barrel if you don't clean it...

Best choice for a shooter is 1952 to 1955/56 but this is just my opinion...
Also there is a ton of information on Wiki...

Oh and all SKS are non-restricted but I dunno about the Paratrooper chinese version...

I hope this is a joke !!! Titanium lined Ruskies ??? Prohibited !!! ROFL !!!

Best $170-200 centerfire rifle you can buy. Well made, cheap to shoot with surplus, clean it after use and it will last a very long time. After that you will need a Mosin Nagant and then a SVT 40 for your Russian collection. Forget about AK47 or AK74, you will never get one. Might be able to shoot one in the states, like I did for a price-of course. Real 30rd mags... that was fun.

A well worn Romanian AK47 in Detroit (range guy said they never clean it and it never stops... for years!)

I was going for a Mosin first, but can't pass up the $200 for a semi like the sks and cheap cheap cheap ammo. Almost like shooting a 22, almost.

And, there are endless aftermarket accessories to dress up your SKS if you choose to at some point or if you find something about it that doesnt fit you. The Chinese versions have a bit of a small stock. I put on a tapco stock (mixed reviews here but mine is working great) and it really brought the gun up to more modern standards IMO.

Yea, not quite. People keep saying that, but show me where you can buy 1500 7.62 x 39 rounds for well under $100. SKS ammo is still 2-3 times more expensive, even when you buy it as cheap as you can.

.22 is boring, centerfire is not (for me anyway). Nothing is as cheap as 22, but ping, ping, ping is boring. SKS is a great starter rifle, that was my point. Surplus ammo is much cheaper than the factory 7.62.

You can't compare rimfire ammo cost with centerfire ammo...

But if you compare 7.62x39 with other centerfire ammunitions, its actually very inexpensive...
