What I meant was get someone to do a chamber cast, then have them machine some custom cases for you, however the inside is not going to be drawn obviously, the hole will be whatever the bullet diameter is or close to it, right down to the flash hole, so it will not grip the chamber walls so well at the moment of firing, meaning that it will have to be for reduced loads, best regards Tony. ;)

Sorry Tony, I disagree, cutting the case as a cylinder, reaming it out for thickness taper away from the case head, and necking it down with a custom sizer won't be anywhere near as hard as you might think. Brass is very malleable, which is how those reduced diameter case mouths are formed in the first place, and how wildcatters make them, and neck down further at home.

I do agree that you'd want to know the proper cartridge dimensions though. It would take some trial and error as necking down increases the thickness of the case mouth.

I would recommend checking with DCG yourself. As i've said before, i know people with these rifles who are not registered with DCG.

Launching a cast bullet at 1000m/s is a bad idea. Its much better to turn bullets on a lathe from brass.

This depends on a bullet. Most .50 bmg powders should work

A mountain.. a big one.. :)

I suggest registering with the CGD. Hopefully they will see how silly most of it is and change the rules. How many military vehicle collectors are registered?

Machining bullets from brass is the way to go. If you are serious, Corbin or RCE can provide the bullet swaging gear.

It takes around 400gr of powder.

even 50bmg powder is too fast....

...........I so wanna go ape-#### with my ptrs...................:(
 
The very slow 50bmg powders are fine. Looking at the various powder specs I have from East Europe and Russia, the variation between the powders used in 12.7x108 and 14.5x114 are small. Of course you will need to work up the load.
 
What's the problem with registering with the CGD? I needed access to some specific military munitions a couple of years ago for film SFX and they weren't available without CGD registration. I went through the process and found the people at CGD were the friendliest and most helpful folks of any government agency I had ever dealt with. Totally painless from start to finish.

Or is everyone just of the "I ain't registerin' nuthin' what no-how" mentality?

On-topic: I too would be interested in locating a PTRS, if the price is right.
 
Sorry for the late response, I don't hang out outside of the EE much. . .

This project is on hold until I'm out of school. I've called CGD and DFAIT lots, and they both tell me to call the other. Eventually, I need to find out from one of them if a PTRD/PTRS/14.4X144 is controlled or not. Once I get the ok, then I'll be able to buy one (once I find one).

As far as ammunition goes, I'm not sure what to do. I had tentatively decided to have cases custom made with BMG primer pockets, use slow BMG powder, and have brass bullets machined, but I haven't looked into any of this at all.

I've also considered (since I'm always one for biting off more than I can chew ;) ) building a replica of a PTRD so it can handle higher pressures. I heard somewhere that you can't use surplus machine gun ammo since it would be too dangerous (was that on this thread?). Obviously that will be BEYOND ridiculously expensive, so maybe I'll just stick to an original.

I'll let you guys know what I'm doing if/when I get around to pursuing this project, which at the earliest will be June (likely next year, however).
