I find it interesting that some people bake their SKS stocks to get rid of the cosmoline... my 1954 was soaked in that crap and I just wiped it down really well and let it sit overnight and its dry as a bone now.

OP maybe you can pick up a stock from someone who modded their rifle with a Tapco or ATI Stock and isn't planning on going back

Its not too hard to go the whole 9 yards and re finish the stock. Its worth it.

Put the entire rifle in the dishwasher.

Under no circumstances should you do this - it's been done, and, as you might imagine, the results were spectacular (in a bad way)

Just buy a can of denatured Ethanol alcohol and carefully mist the surface and gently blend with a clean lint free cloth or 0000 steel wool. Shellac disolves in alcohol and that is how it was originally applied.
