Russian M44. Question about barrel

hi guys.

Did anybody heard about issue to remove barrel from receiver on Russian's Mosins ?

I want to replace barrel on M44, I contacted one gunsmith place and they answer that it's impossible to remove it without breaking barrel or receiver (they tried).

I didn't buy a barrel yet, so did anybody did replace barrel on Mosin ?

It can be done but you will spend almost as much on the job as the rifle is worth. Might want to find a gunsmith that know how to deal with milsurps if you decide to proceed as the gent you asked doesn't seem too experienced.
 
It can be done... The only reason I know is that my otherwise matching M44 with signs of some wear and tear had a non-matching barrel from an arsenal refurb. Great shooter, don't care about the non-matching barrel.
 
Whats wrong with the barrel? The reason I ask is because I have several Mosins with a larger bore than spec, but they all shoot well if you load them up in bullet diameter.
 
my reason to replace barrel is this.

I got this gun to gunsmith, he check it out and said that rifling at the end of the barrel gone (I can see it too, not gone completely but almost gone).
He said that re-crowning is not an option, so you have to get rid of this gun or replace barrel.

From the beginning - I got that gun, I clean it up (remove cosmoline) and clean barrel with solvent (tons of dirt comes out).
I went to shoot it. Can't hit a paper from 50 yards. Bullets hit in random directions. Three different persons shoot, two type of ammo tested, same result.
Conclusion was that barrel can't control the bullet - go see "gun doctor".

Then I re-finish laminated stock and kinda got attached to this gun. I want to keep it.
 
Don't replace the barrel, just ask your gunsmith to counterbore your barrel untill the end of damaged lands of rifling.
Its common practice at russian arsenals to improve accuracy.
You will be impressed with results and muzzle flashes after that.

I would try this too before i went for a full barrel swap. You see many refurbs with countored muzzles, and they shoot better than ones without often enough
 
It's not impossible, I've had it done. It's only worth the effort and risk in certain unusual circumstances. I agree with others that simply replacing the barrelled action or having it counterbored makes much more sense.
