RUSSIAN MOISIN-NAGANT Question??

I got one of these given to me yesterday.

28" bbl, Hex receiver, marked 1923 over SN 756XX, dark bore, mismatched bolt, triangle stamped under rear sight. Bubba varnished the stock, but the outside metal is VG condition.


What's the story on this honey?

That varnish might not be a bubba job, the russians put some pretty heavy shelack on a lot of Mosin furniture.

I'm guessing the triangle stamp behind the rear sight is the mark for the Izhevsk factory (does it have an arrow in it??).

It looks nearly identical to the obviously refurbished 91/30 I got from S.I.R. this past fall but mine is marked 1921

It was 1891 Dragoon that was rebuilt as a Mosin- Nagant 91/30, that is why it is dated 1923. Finish is original Russian lacquer, do not refinish it in anyway.

Shellack

A nice Ishevsk 91/30 conversion model with really clean stamping on the barrel root.
Finish looks to me like the original Russian shellacking. Some times it is a bit redder when the shellack flakes are not dewaxed enough.
You can check if it is the real thing by putting some methyl alcohol on a rag and try wiping a not easily seen spot. If some comes off on the rag, it is shellack.
Be careful with methyl alcohol: it is toxic stuff and passes through skin.
Have fun! Go and shoot that thing!

Seems to me you have an "aftermarket" front sight. The marking on the barrel says Izhevsk Arms Factory 1923 and the receiver is hex, which makes it the 91 model, which should have a post front sight. However the front sight has a hood, which was introduced on the 91/30 model, along with a round receiver. I do not think Finns put round sight hoods on Mosins, they had a better design.

Yes at one time it was a Model 1891 Dragoon, but it was upgraded into a Model 1891/30 by the Russians. Because of this it now has the front and rear sight of a Model 1891/30. Russians only started to switch over to round receivers in 1935/36.
