Hey Guys;

I just bought a Russian MP153 12gauge shotgun off the EE. I've been impressed with the stuff I have read on them, fellow CGN's give them a thumbs up, and the Yanks seem to love them for the price... Here is the best video I have found demonstrating it's "durability" & "reliability"... NOT that I ever would duplicate this "test"...

Cheers

A friend of mine bought one recently from Bass Pro in T.O. Wouldn't cycle with light load 2 3/4. After reading the manuals carefully, turns out that you have to follow a strict regiment to break-in. A certain number of heavy loads followed by medium and ...etc. Did it and he is happy now.

I bought the Remington version and I like it alot... make sure you follow the break in as previously noted... Very easy to take apart and clean... after following the break in period and 250+ rounds through It cycles anything i feed it, if i were to shoot light 7/8oz loads I would just adjust the gas screw... I have mostly shot the cheap walmart winchester shells @ clay

oh make sure you upgrade the bead sight, the factory bead blows, I put a small fibre optic sight on mine

Mine still doesn't really like to cycle the light loads. I'll shoot 10-20 rounds, get pissed off, and use the pump for the rest of the day. I'm gonna buy some more high power loads and see if that smooths things out. Mine hasn't had a problem with any of the higher quality 1 to 1 1/8 oz loads, just the cheap ones. Its a bit heavy if you're going to be walking a long ways with it, but not too bad. Its patterns are more open than the chokes are supposed to be. Other than that I don't have any real problems with it. Its a cheap gun, and it ain't pretty but it works. Maybe next year I'll be able to afford a browning...

Can anyone tell me what type of choke tube they take? It'd be really sweet if it was the Rem choke tubes, but I don't know...

Cheers & Thanks

tru choke I believe. Im not sure if that a brand name or a style, but they are advertised to fit. If you buy one, wanna let me know how it patterns for ya? I'm thinking of getting one to tighten up my patterns.

I'm looking at getting one of these as well, but I typically shoot Wally World ammo for clays at the range. What semi is widely considered the most reliable unit and is modifiable?

The Baikal MP 153 aka Remington's SPR 453 is considered a reliable workhorse. You HAVE to break the gun in with heavy loads, but after that, it will cycle the light stuff... IMHO, considering the cost difference between a SBE & the MP153, I'll take the MP 153 & keep the $1500 in my pocket...

Cheers

i just 'broke in' mine, ran about 100 shells, anything from 3.5" to 3" and a few heavier 2 3/4, it cycles the heavier stuff just fine, but it didn't cycle the real light 2 3/4 after words, so i turned the adjuster knob 3/4 turn towards the lighter end of things and it works good now, the bolt just wasn't going all the way back, the cheap 2 3/4 shells would come out and just jam against the edge of the barrel, or sometimes if i was lucky 'stove pipe' sideways i guess.. must have just been mis adjusted at the factory, is there a way to tell where it SHOULD be set? i can't seem to find any markings around there..

I'm not sure where it should be set. The manual says its supposed to be visible in the notch, but that leaves ALOT of room for adjustment. They go on to say only to adjust it in/out a max of 2. I've played with mine so much I have no idea where its supposed to be set.

I bought the Remington version. Ran 100 rounds through it for the break in. One failure (Think it was the forth round). Love the gun. Its not pretty. But I also would not freak out if I dropped it in the mud are let it slip and harpoon itself in the shallows.

I can shoot 3.5 out of it all day with easy. If the recoils a little heavy just adjust it.
This is my bird gun. If its a bird I will hunt it with the SPR 453.

yeah i shot some pigeons today, liked it alot, might fill up the stock with sand or something, it seems like its balanced quite far ahead,

What I've done on a couple different guns is find a plastic tube the right size to insert in the stock bolt hole and add some #9 lead shot to get the weight / balance I want.

Almost have myself convinced to try out one of the MP153's with a 24" barrel.
