I was contemplating cutting a SKS barrel a bit and giving it a nicer crown. Buddy told me since the Russian models have chrome lined barrels you cant do it. Is this true?

If this has been addressed before just get me the link please

If it's a 1950 itshould not be chrome lined.if the barrel was replaced then it's prob. Chrome lined.

Chrome can't be blued so if the crown isnt all black its chrome line, you can also look it up on google pictures for a better ida of what to look for.

OP chrome is harder(65-80 rc) then any steel tool( hardend steel is about 60rc+or- 1 or 2) you could get you hands on. It wont be easy nor will it yeild noticable results.... Its an sks after all.

The chrome bore started somewhere in 1951. I have a non refurb 1952 and the bore is chromed. Chrome bore can be identified easily by eyes, the shine is not the same.

Yes I have an unrefurb 51 as well and the barrel is chromed... if the muzzle is non blued you can see the ring of the different metal around the bore.

Easy way to tell is by doing the 'bluing test'. Use a very small amount of gun blue and dab it in the bore. If it beads, it's chrome lined. If it's absorbed, it's not chrome lined.
