Hey everyone. I figured this would be a good crowd to ask these questions to.
I recently came into possesion of a dozen EMPTY russian sks crates.
They are all in great condition and smell really strongly of cosmoline (which i have to admit i like).
Im wondering if there is a market to sell these at all or if anyone would want one for a project.
It seems like a shame to me to just break them up. for firewood. I think theyd make great little coffee tables or just extra storage for your gun accessories.

Has anyone made any cool projects out of these?
And do you think anyone would actually want them or are they just firewood waiting to happen...?

I seen one where a guy made a glass top coffee table out of one. It was really well done and looked awesome

Yeah I thought that would be a cool project. It wouldnt require too much skill, just the right tools, and inlay a glass pane. I was thinking of doing something like that on one of them for myself.

If they are nailed, you could break them down into panels fairly easy and maybe ship 2-3 for a lot less, would you be willing to do that?

Thats actually an interesting idea. I hadnt though of that. They are all slightly unique each their own. Some have the lid made of 3 seperate boards and some are just a single sheet. Al the dimensions are almost identical though. The dimensions of the top and bottom are 47in by 20. Amd thats rounded up. They are all a 1/2 to 1 inch smaller than that on both L and W.

If someone was actually interested in one i would consider doing that, sure, but im not sure what shipping costs would look like.

Are the inserts still in them?

Yes, all have the inserts in them still. They all had/have the paperwork from the gunshop that said the years and types of sks' that where in them so i could get an approximate year range on when they were built. It almost seems that the late war years ones had the inserts but didnt have the "runs" in the walls where those inserts slid into. They just stood "loose" clamped down by the base and lid.
But yea they all have ine inserts. Quite a few are actually still linned with a sort of wax paper stapled onto the inside box pannels, which i found interesting.

Yeah mosin crates are wider and flatter than the sks ones. The sks crates are comparable to a chest you would have kids toys in or at the foot of your bed for blankets. Where as a mosin crate would make a great wide coffee/game table in a family room (if you added some legs/feet to it)

i want one and have been looking for a while but as of yet not been able to find one locally.shipping for me would be very costly from BCto NL.If you could take them apart and stack them could be a more economical way to move them.one crate dismantled bottom ,two ends,2 sides, and top ,banded and wrapped .would be interesting to see what shipping would be.
