I just got to thinking about how my old 51 Tula ? has NEVER had a single FTF,FTE or a fail of any description at all.
(Not counting the time it launched a muzzle brake downrange. Didn't even notice it had gone until after 3 or 4 more reloads, no difference in the gun at all proving to me that a MB on an SKS is just extra weight )
Its so bloody reliable it verges on the boring. Minimal maintenance consists of cleaning it after shooting and tossing it in the closet or in the shed. Ive never had to use any tools on it other than the cleaning kit and an oily rag.
I may have missed a previous post but can any one point to an example of a Russian SKS ever failing thru poor original workmanship or materials ?
I see lots of big bucks fancyass uber rifles that crack receivers, blow up bolts, launch barrels etc.
So this is just about Russian SKS,any year, any arsenal
DO THEY EVER FAIL ?

A few firing pin breaks I've heard of. Other than that not too many total failures, they were designed after Stalingrad and meant to be tough and reliable. Of course, any gun given enough neglect and abuse will fail but the SKS should remain servicable for a good many years of moderate use. And a lot of those modern gun failures aren't as numerous as some would have you believe. There's a few CZ 858/CSA failure threads out there for example, but remember that Wolverine imported somewhere in the realm of 8000 of the CZ's alone. A few dozen defective guns in a lot that big are to be expected.

I'm in total agreement with you.
I get tired of the threads bashing particular makes/models and I don't want to start a thread along those lines.
Proportionally, given that apparently there is an SKS under just about every sink in the country, the instances of serious or minor fails is incredibly small.
The thing is a functional masterpiece and definitely the one I would grab out of the safe if I could only take one.

Russian SKS........Do they ever blow up ?

Back in Soviet Russia SKS blows YOU up!

aahhhhh the 80`s.

all kidding aside, I have never heard of it.

I think the main reason is this rifle was made according to Soviet military specs and it is one of the few military grade rifles. I doubt you can imagine what would've happen to weapon constructors, engineers or workers back in USSR if any of SKS would've blow :)

I wish they designed modern rifles on the sks model, so frigging robust and so frigging simple!
When I took my first one apart, I was just simply amazed by how simple the design is.

I know, if you could get modern barrel tolerances and accuracy and sks reliability, it would be an awesome gun.

Everything can fail over time and use. If you abuse it will break. You know I've never had a firearm blow up the reason is simple they way it's used and inspecting it closely after prolonged use to look for cracks ect. Lots of the guns that blow up are due to human error on the side of the user more then anything or neglect like never cleaning a firearm. I had 1 person tell me his gun was junk because it doesn't work right he fired 3,000 lead 22lr rounds and it fouled up the barrel so bad you couldn't see through it. A chunk of lead broke off and he thought the barrel was broken some scubbing and solvent down the barrel and it looked like new again. Handed it back and went nope just fouled up bad with that blazer ammo I like copper ammo because it fouls allot less. Another person had his gun full of dirty powder and it finally stopped working cleaned it handed it to him said try it now and it worked fine just needed to be cleaned...

I've never heard of, or seen, any thread, anywhere of an SKS kaboom - I think it's likely a combination of HD construction, simple design and widespread surplus ammo availability. It might be different if/when people are reloading for this caliber - right now, it makes sense to shoot surplus.

Do SKS' ever blow up?... If you set it on a land mine or similar Mr. Simonov's creation would be scrap I would imagine;) Major failure from "normal" use? Never heard of one.

They do have a tendency toward a forward stuck (protruding) firing pin however, and must be chambered facing in a safe (down range) direction...just in case (FA burst).

I've had a bolt crack on mine but due to the thorough cleaning regimen I subject my rifles to, I caught it and replaced the bolt before it failed on me. Of course, the SKS stayed in the safe until the new bolt came in, on the day the board of directors banned steel core ammo at the range. Good ol' Murphy

he should have been shooting the copper washed stuff and it would have seen 5000rds before he needed to clean it lol

1x vote SKS reliability! shoot it, clean it, burry it in a garbage bag in the garden till the spring and shoot it again.
