Russian SKS gas tube fit questions

Hi,

I bought an extra gas tube to use with a tapco handguard as I don't want to mess up the original one. The new (used) gas tube pin area is about 1mm too wide to slide in between the piston extention posts. Is it normal for the width to vary or could this be from a different variation of SKS? Can I file it on both sides where the pin ends are to make it fit? I'm awaiting a second SKS I'm keeping the nicer one original and putting the tapco stock on the other one. Maybe it will fit the other one better...

Thx!

Sounds like you have thought out some options and I think they are good ones! Many SKS have filing marks on the end of the gas tube
where it was adjusted to fit better. Some still need a whack on the hand guard to make them go down and then another to get them off.
I also have SKS where the gas tube slips into place and can be removed with out any effort as well. Looking forwards to reading your posts
when you have more questions or want to show us what you have.

I actually got it to fit. The bottom was a bit flared out only a hair not as bad as I originally thought. Original one on the rifle is looser.

I've looked at after-market gas tubes like that and they generally have the "some fitting may be required" disclaimer.

I've got a gas tube sitting here in front of me on my desk with no 'rivet' in it after wrapping it in the Tasco replacement cover.

I've seen some replacements (rivet) online but shudder paying more for shipping that the actual product itself.

Let us know how it functions. Personally, of all the parts of an SKS the gas tube would be in my top-5 of my "hope it doesn't fail" list.

Boy that sucks - and yes does it function? Frankly though the "hope it doesn't fail" will not enter into your dreams unless you are using aftermarket parts.
