Russian SKS Magazine options

That complete modification after having a gunsmith do it is going to be the same price as the gun...

It's not hard to do yourself with a little YouTube and elbow grease. You will become more familiar with your rifle in the process of bringing it (arguably) into the 21st century. Your friendly, neighborhood gunsmith may not always be available.

I wouldn't be advising anyone to get the XCR mag conversions right now. The XCR rifles and pistols got banned, which means once the amnesty ends (currently due to end in April, although I suspect that'll be moved back) the 10 round pistol magazines themselves may be prohibited devices because the pistol they go with will no longer be "readily available" or whatever the wording is.

3 (1) Any cartridge magazine

(a) that is capable of containing more than five cartridges of the type for which the magazine was originally designed and that is designed or manufactured for use in

(i) a semi-automatic handgun that is not commonly available in Canada.....

No commonly available handgun, no 10 round magazines.

So they are still legal, as of this post. I would suggest anyone who relies on them ensures they have a healthy supply moving forward.

AK-47s are not "readily available" but the magazines are still legal.

Yes. As of right now they are still legal. They have not made any announcements about these magazines, but I have seen this discussion brought up before - possibly by Ian Runkle in one of his videos on the OiC?

But AK pistol mags are not. It's the pistol mag part that matters here. 5 round xcr mags will still be legal(i can only assume), but IMO that's a lot of money and work just to get 5rd detachable mags.

I edited my above post to clarify I'm speaking specifically to the 10 rd pistol mags.

All valid points to consider.

Back when the prices weren't silly i got one in full tapco with lots of tapco mags and one all original
that way i get best of both worlds.

Depending on the condition of the one you have you may actually be making it worth less by spending money on it.

If you have a couple hundred to spend, save up a little bit more and buy a second one already done up.

Then you have 2 !!!
and 2 guns is always better than 1 gun

It is usually cheaper to buy one done up, that's a good point. My buddy has put all the bells and whistles on his (kicklite stock, replacement hand guard, mag conversion, a brake, probably other stuff I can't think of) and there's no way he'd get his money back if he sold it. Maybe 75%? Maybe...

All going to be confiscated for pennies on the dollar anyway, if things progress in favor of UN2030. Ammunition, gold and maybe real estate are the only investments I would be making, if hope is lost for freedom in Canada.

many restricted will be confiscated
NR, not so much .....

I already broke it down for a good cleaning on the weekend. I am my own wrench on my race car and my motorcycles, so I don't think being able to do it is the issue, but the lack of experience could be, and I really don't want to screw it up. I will check out youtube though.

LOL...Yesss, I must be lying about this gun and now need to post pics of it because you have some strange hunch that I am "weird" and request it. Seriously, what the hell is with some people on here?

To be honest, I haven't really looked into how to ID these things for their value. I "think" its a 1951 based on the top markings, and I paid for the best grade they have when I purchased it at Tenda (it was only $20 more, so I said what the heck). It doesn't look fired much, and the cosmoline on it wasn't too bad. I figure that they are still cheap enough that I could buy a 2nd for a collectors item if I wanted?

At the moment it will stay as is, since I have yet to find the mags I was looking for, new or on e.e. (still haven't gotten around to those other gun sites)

If you have the mechanical aptitude, I highly recommend modifying your rifle to accept Type-81 magazines.
They're as cheap as surplus AK mags right now, and it's possible to modify the rifle so that the SKS last-round bolt catch continues to function as intended

Is this by using the hical kit? Or some other way?

Ive tried the bauer, promag and tapco all three had feeding issues that the factory mag doesn't i tried them in multiple Russian and Chinese sks's.
