Hey, Ive been having problems with the retaining pin for the longest time. I know this has problem been asked a million times, but I have a question if I cant get it out. anyways Ive tried several ways to get it out. Sitting it in mineral spirits for a few nights, but nada. Also tried penetrating oil for a few nights, but didnt work either. Boiling water didnt work either. Also does the extractor and spring have to be on while trying to hammer out the pin ? I have a Russian SKS with spring, not the free floating version. Just wondering if I NEVER get this pin out can I just clean it as usual and maybe spray some carb cleaner in it and then use my air compressor and get all the gunk out ? Also I believe im hitting the right end so Im adding a picture just in case Im a moron and hitting the wrong end.
Thanks in advance

Mine was stuck good when I first got it. I tried using a rubber mallet, punch and a wood base. No dice.

What I ended up doing, was putting the bolt on top of an socket (wide enough to clear the "foot" on the bottom of the pin). placed it on the concrete floor and gave it a good wack with a punch and 5 lbs sledge.

Only had to do that once, now I can get by with a standard hammer (16oz?) and punch.

I shoot corrosive milsurp ammo, so I disassemble mine quite often. There was also a fair amount of cosmo when I first disassembled it.

The small end of the pin is the right end to hit. You can't even take the extractor off without having that pin driven out.

I had one that was stuck pretty good too. What I wound up doing was drilling a hole in a 2x4, holding the bolt to it with tie wraps, and hammering the pin out with a punch and good-size hammer. It took a few good smacks, but once the pin moves even a little bit, you'll be able to get it out.

With a spring-loaded firing pin, I wouldn't recommend just shooting the pin channel full of carb or brake cleaner to get the cosmoline and other gunk out. The spring coils would just hold too much (I think) gunk inside the channel, so you could possibly end up with slamfires. Not good.

Wood is not the best surface to hammer against, too much of the force is absorbed by the wood. An old socket underneath the bolt resting on a solid surface like a steel vice or a concrete surface work well.

I drilled a scrap piece of 2x4 so the pin falls into the hole as it gets driven out... First time around I had to use an auger punch to get her started and finished with a pin punch. Penetrating lube helps.

Perhaps hard steady pressure just in case the pin has flared a bit.
Using a clamp you can modify apply solid steady pressure and see what happens. I made a pin removal/insertion press with bolt and one of the sks sight adjustment tools. More friendlier than pounding with a punch and hammer.

Thanks for the messages guys. ' shredder' I can take my extractor off even tho the pin isnt out. Not sure this is cause I have a different sks year. Ive tried the wood method before but I would drive it so hard that the wood would just absorb everything and i would have a nice looking piece of wood with my bolt indented in it lol. Right now I have been using a electrical outlet box for standard light switches and popped out middle knockout and use this as my support when hitting bolt. Gonna bring my bolt to work and see if I can find the right materials in the wood workshop like a vise to hammer it out. Wish me luck lol

You're not gonna drive it out if the wood is completely supporting it from the bottom.. You need a hole under it. Then just put on an auger punch and give it a good whack.. After a few times, the auger punch won't be needed and you'll be able to do the job just with a regular pin punch. Penetrating lubricant helps.

Hard wood, not soft wood surface with a hole drilled. Use a brass punch and hammer, should't put up a fight.

edit... I see you got it out already lol
