Russian SKS Serial Number Registry

A trend seems to be unfolding with the 'as-issued' Tula SKS's:

by 1954, the bayonet finish is 'matte coated silver' and in a few cases 'matte coated gold'.

Even with the refurbs, the majority by 1954 and onward are 'matte coated silver'.

The numbers of Izhevsk's entered is very low, but all bayonets for 'as-issued' (1953 and 1954) are 'matte coated silver' or 'matte coated gold'.

Another note: Most refurbs, regardless of year, have 'matte coated silver' bayonet. This would indicate to me that the bayonet was commonly replaced with the matte silver variant or recoated during refurbishment -- better corossion resistance and low glare?

The one exception is 1952, where all entries so far, for refurb, indicate 'shiny finish' or 'blued finish'! There's only one entry for an 'as-issued' 1952, and it indicates a 'matte coated silver' bayonet! Go figure.

The database needs to considerably grow to make any definitive claims on bayonet trends.

Thank you gmctech

Some interesting patterns unfolding with respect to Cyrillic character suffix and prefix combinations, but the sample size size is too small to draw any conclusions.

How's it coming along? I redid mine today, but I have a few I haven't stripped and cleaned yet, so I don't know about every op rod spring.

RMX; things have slowed considerably. There's exactly 82 entries, far short of my hopes and expectations. The registry has serious value, but until the veterans chime in with their support, I fear the masses will ignore it. Ironically, there's now more US entries coming in, and I barely promoted the registry at the Survivor forum.

Thanks for the updates. Fingers crossed that the registry will take off. We need more data and less speculation and opinion regarding the Russian SKS.

Well the powers to be thought this should be a sticky! Good to see (and I'm humbled). I also see increased activity in the survey from both sides of the border.

Thanks to those that have added their SKS's.

Keep 'em coming. :D

ps. The summary statistics feature is now turned on. Once you complete the survey, you have the option of linking to a page that provides some basic statistics. Nothing too flashy. I ensured that all serial number data was fully disaggregated.

Simply click on "see previous responses" after you click "Submit".

PIVOT TABLE -- PREFIX/SUFFIX UNIQUE COUNT

The link above takes you to a pivot table that shows all Cyrillic character ranges that have been added to date.

The "*" symbol separates a prefix from a suffix

The "T_" and "I_" represent the arsenal

There is some "blocking" occurring, but the database is way too small to start drawing any conclusions around prefix and year patterns.

Regarding suffix, the only conclusion I can draw so far is that they are limited to 1954 Izhevsk and 1955/56 "letter series"/"no date" Tula.

I will create more pivot tables as the database grows and becomes more useful.

SUMMARY STATISTICS -- SKS SURVEY

Again, once the database grows in size (200+ responses), I will begin attaching more interesting comparisons... looking at multiple variables, like year and arsenal by physical features, cyrillic code, etc.

have a 1950 tula only has 4 numbers

Looking forward to the data. Click on the "RUSSIAN SKS SERIAL NUMBER REGISTRY" link below, and add your SKS. Cheers, K :)

Thanks for the kind words and support.

Note: I added an additional pivot table that provides maximum (highest) serial number per Cyrillic character range.

**********************************************************************
:sniper: --->PIVOT TABLES -- PREFIX/SUFFIX UNIQUE COUNT & MAXIMUM SERIAL NUMBERS<---

The first tab provides a pivot table that indicates maximum (highest) serial number per Cyrillic character ranges that have been added to date. Over time, the sum of all those numbers will hopefully indicate production numbers.

The second tab provides a pivot table that indicates total number of occurrences per Cyrillic character range.
