i recently saw a russian sks:

tula made (there is a 'star' on the side of the receiver), but the dust/receiver cover has no marking. wood stock is well used (not laminated), bluing is about 80%, nothing matched, someone carved a 4-digit number on the outside of the gas piston and another 4-digit number on the bolt charger, where the original serial # has been filed off. traces of camo paint on the outside of the gas piston. bore is bright and shiny with strong rifling. no rust or pitting. not babba'ed.

If the cover is matching and unmarked with a star on the receiver, it just means it's a late 1955 or 1956 Tula. Tula stopped marking top covers in mid to late 1955. If it's mismatched though, no telling what's afoot.

the receiver and the top cover are mismatched. :(

For a mismatched Russian SKS I'd pay $200 tops, and it better still have the cleaning kit, bayonet, and cleaning rod.
