I'm looking for a Russian SKS. Not Yugoslavian, not Chinese... Russian.
I live in Vancouver, and every store here only carries the Chinese model. Anybody selling, or know a good place to get one? And how much would one usually go for?
My PAL actually hasn't arrived yet, but according to my online status, it has already been issued and should be here within 2 weeks (Not really sure how accurate that is). Yes, I'm sort of a newb. :)
I found that taxidermy place in Saskatchewan, selling them for $229... I'm probably gonna end up buying off them if I can't find one somewhere else for a better price. I'd rather buy one locally as well.

Smart bomb: If your not in a hurry SIR has refurb Russians for 169.00. Delvered to my door 199.00. They are not in until June but I am not in any hurrey. Fromntier has them for 241 delivered to your door.

And I'm guessing the Frontier ones aren't refurb?

Reportedly all the Russian SKS's are coming from the same distributor (Bell). Most likely all have been refurb'd sometime in their life. Frontier offers some handpicked grade pieces (but these might be sold out already) for a nominal fee. SIR charges a flat rate and you get whatever they hand you (much like a Russian would as he's standing in the conscript line).

You don't need your P.A.L. in hand to purchase a gun. As long as it has been issued you can call them, get the # and order your gun. The dealer will then call them to confirm your # and if it's verified, he'll register it, and ship it as soon as you pay. I've been told this by a dealer. ;)

A Russian SKS should be good for 3-5MOA... if your Yugo does 1.5MOA with surplus ammo all day long you will NEVER be happy with any other SKS rifle. The SKS is made to hit minute of soldier at UP to 300 meters. Most accurate SKS out of the many I have owned was a M59/66AB1 that would reliably do just under 3" at 100 meters with Winchester ammo and was able to hit the 16" gong 5 for 5 at 350 meters.

Russian SKS accuracy

Here is some info from good article I found comparing SKS's:
The Russian SKS looks almost identical to the screwed-in barrel Chinese version except for the much better wooden stocks. The Russian model can also be found with a laminated stock, but really isn't better looking in my opinion. The Russian however isn't even close to the same quality of the oriental cousins, its far superior in every way.

The Russian was manufactured with tighter tolerances, better fittings, smoother trigger, no jams, and, well, just everything is better. Accuracy tells it all, with normal groups of 1 to 2.5". My dad is far sighted and can see 100 yard targets pretty well, (he can see those little 3" targets while I have a hard time making out where the red 6" dot is), and so it isn't uncommon to see him grouping under an inch. Even comparing the Russian with modern rifles, the Russian feels smoother and of more quality than just about anything you can find. I love my Russian SKS!
These are U.S. prices.
Model Price range Accuracy Quality
SKS - pinned $ 80-$125.00 3-5 inches Good
SKS - screwed $ 80-$150.00 3-4 inches Good
SKS - Russian $150-$250.00 1-3 inches High
MAK-90 stamped $225-$325.00 4-6 inches Good
MAK-90 forged $250-$325.00 3-5 inches Good
SA-85 $500-$850.00 1-2 inches High

where did you get this info ? i want to read more.

Whoever compiled the list has never handled an unrefurbed Type 56 from /26\.

True. Lots of people don't know Chinese SKS had a couple of improvements over Russian SKS 45. For example, Chinese SKS (not that manufactured in very early years) used a better steel than Russion one. Without this improvement, often the barrel of SKS would become useless before the 6000 rounds fired. I'd guess thats why most Russion SKS were refurblished.

Hmmmm, interesting! I've never heard of that before.

I've always figured the Russian steel would be better.

Do you have any sources so I can read more?

Thanks!

Ok now I am curious: The SKS-D seems to be more expensive than others. Is it one of the ones with better steel? I just ordered one of the refurbs, partly based on this article: http://www.simonov.net/uberrussian.htm. If at the end of the day they are basically equal I 'll just wait (for ever it seems) for the Russian.
