i just got an SKS and i want to hunt with it this fall. can anyone tell me anything i might need to know about it...what type of ammo...what type of optics/where could optics be found? It would be very helpfull.

i used mine this year, one of the times i went out deer hunting. i have a cheap 22 centerfire scope on it 4x. i only sighted it in to 100m but it was fairly good grouping's around 3 1/2". i bought 7.62 x 39 hunting ammo at $20.00 a box for 25. but rought sighted with cheap ammo that came with the gun. didnt see any deer the day we were out, but did shoot a 5" pole at 125m from the standing twice with two rounds.
since the scope mounts available for the sks are not manufactured to fit on first try you will have to use a file and remove some metal. one hint is when mounting the scope mount the less metal removed will crate a tighter fit and much tighter reliable grounpings.

I like the PRVI ammo in 125gr soft point. With my Girlfriends CZ bolt action I can keyhole them at 100 yards using a 3 point shooters rest. She shot a Boone and Crockett whitetail last fall with these rounds. I don't get that kind of accuracy with any of my SKS rifles but its good enough to shoot deer.

As far as scopes, I'm not sure there is a point of scoping an SKS. After 150 yards the bullet starts to rapidly drop and lose energy. Short of that, its a reasonable bullet for deer with open sights. My nephew loads a 150 grain soft point bullet for his SKS with good success but it sights and shoots different than the standard 125gr target stuff and soft points. I keep looking at scopes, but the jury is still out whether they are accurate or can hold a zero. Maybe someone else has some success with them and willing to share.
