Russian SKS45 long thread.

Frontier Firearms SKS

Feel free to move this post if it belongs elsewhere. Not really a 'battle' rifle, but definitely not a black/green rifle either.... and the title does say .30 cal....

Anyways, I don't currently own any firearms, and 90% of my lifetime shooting was done with a C7A1 in the Reserves so my knowledge is limited mostly to what I can learn on the internet. How would you rate the Russian SKS (specifically, the batch being sold on Frontier for $230 right now) as a first rifle. Mostly casual/plinking etc.... I'm gonna get a bolt-action for hunting and serious target shooting, but I'd like to get at least one iron-sights rifle to play around with. These are listed as Russian so I'm assuming original style quality (i.e. extremely rare failure to feed/stoppages, weak but acceptable accuracy, heavy but still in C7 range trigger weight/smoothness). Also, can anyone confirm how reliably they burn through the corrosive Czech ammo being sold on Frontier and CanAm. Thanks very much for your help.

There's an SKS forum as on off-shoot of the mil-surps forum.

I can't say anything of the batch from Frontier, but I'm sure they are fine. Russian SKS's are right up there in quality with the Yugoslavian ones, only they have chromed bores. The SKS is fine for a first rifle. If Russian peasant conscripts could figure it out, then you'll have no problems with it either. It field strips in about 10 seconds, and is much more simple than a C7.

I have an all matching Chinese SKS from the early 80's, and it shoots the Czech surplus reliably and accurately enough for plinking. I have yet to have a single ejection or feeding problem.

Buy it and shoot it... it's the only way to know for sure. ;)

Not the early ones....I have a 1950 that is NOT chrome. Ck out the SKS forum. All the info you need is there.

2x, from 1949 to middle of 1951 , russian SKS45 was made with non-chrome and then switched to chrome till the end of production in early 1956 , however a non-chrome may be replaced during refurb.

chances are you will get a chrome SKS45.

all yugo SKS are non-chrome.

i just received the cabela's spr&summer 08 SIR mail order this morning and the russian SKS45 are in the catalogue pg 132 . no changes , still ETA june 08 at $169.99 .

I wonder if this container will also have parts, or if some of the rifles that are considered no good will be sold for parts. I need a Russian pinned mag.

not likely to have any spare parts, any spare parts was shipped to factory 26 in china long long time ago , they been cannabilizing few rifles at a time ever since but that not to say that frontier and SIR wont do the same so you may be able to buy one off them.

You guys have any insight into how these russian sks rifles mags will be limited to 5 rounds?

no idea but preferably its not rivetted pin , too visible . in any case it has to be done prior to landing on our shore.

if they swap for a 5 round made in china magazine i will be cancelling my order.

not likely to happen cos it will probably cost them more to replace (not joking) . dont forget we are getting russian for less than norinco , how often does that happen?
